BT Business hub Question

[link to this post]

Hi Can anyone tell me if the BT Business Hub 2700HGV is the latest version please.

Also will this work on a normal BT Broadband option 1 line or does the exchange equipment differentiate between normal home broadband and business broadband.

Has anyone managed to get this to work on a standard option 1 BT broadband package.

Thanks

If you want to identify a specific model, there's detail here,

http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/ir1002700HGV.htm

The router will work absolutely fine on a residential BT service without the need to reflash firmware, unlock or anything else, just plug in and go.

What I would say is that in my experience the HH2 syncs at least as high as the 2Wire, and works fine on my very rural line.

Thanks shtu can I ask if you have used the BT business hub on a normal residential line without having to hack or change the firmware from the standard BT software as on some other posts in regard to this (non spot forum) it has been suggested that the business hub will not recognize my residential user name etc. so a hack is needed.

I currently have the home hub V2 and it syncs fine on G992.1 but loses sync at night at times so am looking for a little more stability if possible. I am 4.2KMs from the exchange and it has been again suggested that the business hub hangs on to a lower noise margin at night.

Yes, I did. Version 5.something firmware. (I'm trying to remember if it upgraded to 6.something)

I use option 3, but the authentication is the same for all customers, a generic username and password. Don't waste money on an unlocked one, buy a new-in-sealed-box one for less money.

You can buy a secondhand one for under £10 delivered, new-in-box for about £20.

You might be surprised, my line is 9.5Km and I found the HH2 to be as good as the 2Wire in terms of sync speed. The 2Wire does appear to be a snappier, more responsive bit of kit, though it does have one noticeable failing - uPNP doesn't work, so you'll need to learn how to set up port forwarding manually if you have anything that makes use of it.

The main reason I stuck with the HH2 is that I make extensive use of Broadband Talk (which is also a "just works" on the 2Wire), and the 2Wire does not pass the ring signal through from the landline in the same way that the HH2 does.

Have a read through my posts from, ooh, about a year ago when I tried one.

Thanks shtu I have seen a couple of new ones on E bay for as you say around £20. In regard to the UPNP I dont think this is a requirement for me as I have no games consoles connected nor do I use broadband talk.

I do however connect my hub via an ethernet cable to an apple airport exspress unit (in bridge mode) which forms my home network for my Macs and PC to connect to using wireless. Hopefully this will still work Ok with the business hub set up for DHCP.

I have a V6 firmware hub and it works fine with any email address.

I have tried [email protected] [email protected] and [email protected] - all seem to work and the hub does not reject any even the third one which is not associated directly with the broadband account.

The only niggle is the GUI on the V6 - not as nice as the V5 but I have it running the DHCP server to support a 24 port switch connected directly then from that switch several PCs and systems plus two additional routers running as WAPs only - one being a 2wire V4.

If you don't know what it is you probably don't need it. smile

All it means is that is you *do* use a console, run your own servers, whatever, you have to spend 5 mins setting port forwards up yourself. No big deal, if you ever need to, go to portforward.com and they tell you how.

Can't help you much there, but if you use the airport purely to get wireless internet access you don't need it - just use the wireless in the router and let everything connect using dhcp.

(If you do need all that itunes streaming gubbins I'm sure it'll be fine, but I'm not the person to ask. Macs are like speaking french - I can do it, but it's slow, awkward, and a lot easier if I stick to what I know.)

Re: BT Business hub Question

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

I managed to get a BT business hub on E bay brand new sealed version 2. Plugged it in and as suggested above it automatically connected to the internet and works fine. Just a couple of questions it automatically connected using a user name [email protected] and again automatically put in a password which just shows as a row of dots is this the account of the person who sold it to me and if so do I need to change this. Also how do I find out the password in case it reverts to the factory settings at any time. The only reference to the identity of the password is where the manual states it was on the paper work when you signed up to business broadband which I dont have as I am on BT home broadband. When I was connected originally they sent me a user name xxxxxxx.xxxxxx@ btbroadband .com but no password as they said I did not need one.

The other question is will it as it has the BT version 5.29 firmware automatically up date at sometime to the latest version 6. something and will this cause me any problems with the user name and password.

Thanks

When my B/Hub firmware chaged to Version 6 I had to put my User name xxxxxxx.xxxxxx@ btinternet .com in befor I got a green light.
Since then I have never had any problems, rock solid.
