BT Infinity and new Router.

[link to this post]

Hi there,

I'm having BT infinity installed next week (17th) and i've been told i'm being sent a new router. (Homehub for Infinity) - now as the current homehub on stand BB couldn't even get wifi upstairs i've been using a Belkin N1 Vision (all in one ADSL modem and router) with no problems for 18 months. I wanted to know, will my Belkin be compatible with BT infinity? As i can imagine this new homehub being just as bad as the ones before?

Thanks

Jon B

* Just noticed they say they bring a VDSL modem with them. So looks like i'll be buying a new router frown

Maybe not- from the spec it's got a WAN Ethernet port.

Plug the VDSL modem into that and it should work, though you may have to change the setup a bit (PPPoE instead of PPPoA, at a guess).

Have a close read of the manual.

Yeah thats the non modem version - sadly my version (integrated adsl modem) only has the RJ11 - i will pick up this version or a dlink in the meantime as have never had any luck with BT homehubs!

Ah well, it was worth a look frown

I'll (hopefully) be in a similar position in a couple of months, but I'll likely go for the Apple Airport Extreme base station.

(Mostly Mac stuff here smile)

Re the Airport Extreme: I've just got BT Infinity and the AE works very nicely with the supplied VDSL modem. I'm using a strange combination of Mac, Windows and Ubuntu. It only took five minutes to set up; connect using PPPoE using the login details supplied in the Home Hub manual (easily entered via Airport Utility) and you can ditch the Home Hub. I had the AE already, so i've not bothered to test out the range of the Home Hub's wireless, but the Hub supplied with Infinity does do wireless N so may have a better range than older Home Hubs. Basically, once the installation is complete the VDSL modem takes the place of your old ADSL modem and the Airport network carries on as usual, but a lot faster (22 down and 7 up last night, but apparently speed fluctuates for the first few days).

I just recieved my Homehub, and from the outside it looks exactly the same as the old one, just with an RJ45 instead of an RJ11. i've ordered a new router as i'm not even going to plug this thing as i would quite like to be able to use broadband upstairs. smile

It's 802.11n, gives pretty good range over wi-fi - I can get 65Mb two floors above the hub. So you might be pleasantly surprised at the range, especially vs. the original 802.11g hub.

Thanks for that.

Found out this morning that BT have enabled my cabinet for fibre in the last few days, so it looks like the credit card is in for a hit smile
