BT FTTC everywhere by end 2010?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I phoned BT yesterday/today to resolve broadband issue - IP profile stuck at 135Kbps on 2Mbps line for last 3 days

Anyway I went in to a little rant about the speed and the fact they charge the same for 'good' lines vs 'bad' so where is their intensive to improve my network.

The support person said that it is a 'fact' that by December 2010 all exchanges will have fibre to the cabinet and I will get 12-15Mbps.

Can anyone confirm this fact??

Thanks.

BT won't even have ADSL2+ to all exchanges by December 2010...

ps

And even if your exchange is enabled, it doesn't automatically mean you'll get it- it also needs your street cabinet to be upgraded.

I suspected that to be the case but she was so assertive that this was the case, I felt I must have missed some welcome news.

I think I will be writing to the chairman to complain about this and my connection problems.

BT FTTC everywhere by end 2010

From what I recall, the target for FTTC is to have approx 40% coverage by 2012, so unless the adviser was referring to your exchange area only then she was misinformed. And even then, as pointed out elsewhere, there is no guarantee that every part of an exchange area will be covered by FTTC.

If I check Samknows there is no date for FTTC on my exchange. Only an ADSL2+ date which is March 2011 and that isn't going to make a lot of difference

BT ADSL2+ requires the installation of WBC equipment and services at the exchange. Normally ADSL2+ would be available very soon after those were installed.

All FTTC packages on offer at the moment enter the WBC system at the exchange and are delivered through it to the ADSL2+ ISP handover points.

Maybe the CSA meant FTTC will be available on your exchange by Dec 10.

The coverage will be 5 million homes passed by the end of the year if it is on target.

Absolutely not true. BT may tell customers fancy stories but the reality is quite different.

On this very forum BT_Care (a BT Broadband ISP representative) claimed that by 2010 all exchanges would be enabled for its so-called up-to 20Mbps service. This of course is not the case either because there is no way BT will have enabled all exchanges to its 21CN by then.

Also, be careful, when BT uses terms like 'unlimited', it doesn't really mean that, there are always hidden FUPs. Or, when they talk about a up-to 8Mbps 20CN MaxDSL, it really means up-to 7.15MB speed profile for the shortest lines only at the best.
