newsgroups are throttled to around 2meg on my line remember im on adsl max and not infinity but the throttle protocol will be unicversal sat and sunday p2p and torrents start to be throttled from around 9am

I've not noticed any peak time throttling of newsgroups on Infinity, whenever I have downloaded anything I get around 4.6MB/sec. I don't use p2p.

There is NO throttling of Newsgroups (NNTP) on BT at all (ADSL or Infinity). I use newsgroups a lot, so do know.
P2P is another matter. Throttling at peak times and according to users sometimes over extends into offpeak , but as I don't use P2P very much, this does not worry me

Perhaps Geordie is confusing BT's free Giganews subscription which is certainly restricted to around 2meg speeds to us adsl max punters although still a great part of the bundle.

Just because you can't, doesn't mean that someone else can't.

I love the way the moment someone suggests using an "unlimited" line, the self-appointed bandwidth police jump up.

Funny thing is, together with the "wiggling finger and disproving attitude", they never, ever say how much use IS acceptable.

Well it's hard to know how much usage is acceptable because ISP's don't seem to publish contention ratios any more.

Simple maths gives a fair answer from the total possible divided by the contention.

I.E. if you had a 20Mbps service and a contention ration of 50:1 then ((20 Mbps) * 1 month) / 50 = 128.4 gigabytes that's what your fair chunk of bandwidth is.

In reality some people use far less so others can "get away with" using more. So some might use 5GB and some might use 500GB as long as no single person uses 6.26TB then it'll probably work ok.

news.btinternet.com is outsourced to giganews. You'll have to give it a go to see if infinity users can access it. ISTR You leave username and paswword blank. It is certainly throttled and number of threads restricted.

I had forgotten that existed (I used it when I was with BT in 2002/2003). Must try it smile

wouldn't mind it being a bit slow if it's free. not that giganews is particularly expensive for what you get.
