Speed test

I'm considering changing to BT broadband (normal) they say I can expect 2.7meg wheras I currently get on average about 6meg. How accurate are the BT line speed predictions. I don't want to take the risk if there is no chance of getting a similar speed.

Post you current router stats and which exchange? Who are you with at the moment and which package?

BT and most ISPs tend to underestimate speeds in their predictions.

The BT checker gives an estimate (and a very conservative one, at that).
In reality it seems nothing more than a wild guess.

I get this result (telling me what speed I can get): -

My line speed is actually around 4.7Mbps (give or take 0.3Mbps) - so way more than BT's stab in the dark guess of 2Mbps.
My data speed is normally at least twice the BT's guess for the line speed alone.

If you're currently getting 6Mbps, that's what you'll get with BT.
Unless.....You're currently getting that speed because you've tweaked your noise margin down (which tends to upset BT's systems, resulting in a higher margin).

If you're not on an unbundled product (e.g. Sky, Talk-Talk, BE, O2) and are already on a BT Wholesale connection, your connection speed will remain the same (as all that will happen is BT will direct your data-stream through their own networks, rather than your current ISP.

Thanks, that cheers me up no end.

You'll get exactly the same if your exchange is only 20CN or you will get about 9-10 Meg if it is 21CN. But as you didn't post your exchange, I can't tell.

Forgot that, exchange is Baldslow, east sussex which is not down for 21c yet on samknows.

Well, bit the bullet and migrated from AAISP which imho is one of the best of the bunch. The main reason is the saving each month with the BT openzone being important.

I have just done the same, chosen to migrate from AAisp to BT. Like you say, i have found AAisp brilliant, but looking to save some dosh and also attracted by the btfon/openzone stuff.

My BT service is due to start on Wednesday so fingers crossed. I was with BT for a while (going back about 3 or 4 years ago now) and remember them being just fine.

Mines due on 19th the same day that DD's line is set in operation by sky. She went there because her exchange is 1/4 mile away and will get up to 12meg.
