Re: Infinity, the nightmare begins ? [again]

I am unable to access either of those sites. Internet has been a complete nightmare on Infinity for me this afternoon/evening. Some sites work perfectly, others do but very slowly and some not at all. BBC site is really slow - but it appears to be to things like emp.bbci.co.uk rather than to bbc.co.uk itself.

Tried speedtest.net and also got mixed results:

First one was fine:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1633989042.png

But then....
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1633981309.png
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1633992144.png

Other sites I can't get to:
www.trustedreviews.com
www.sky.com

One thing I have noticed is that all the sites I am having problems with seem to point to akamai.net. Two things are probably not related (speedtest results and slow sites).

EDIT
Think problems above were being caused by OpenDNS. Tried changing to OpenDNS earlier today because of DNS failures I was getting from BT. Anyway, just changed back and all sites seem to be working again. It also fixed my speedtest results to Newbury!! Bizarre!

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1634012224.png

I don't understand networking enough to begin to understand why smile

Have been having exactly the same problems since around 19.00 hrs, some sites (eg Sky.com, Apple.com/uk) unable to load, others fine, unable to access app store on iPad or the Sky News App. This is on ADSL2 not Infinity.

Just changed back from OpenDNS to BT DNS and all problems resolved!

This morning Maidenhead is still bad - down at 20Mbps and ridiculous latency.

Definitely sounds like an Infinity problem rather than Maidenhead itself.

Yeah it seems that at least a couple of routes are very, very bad, and the "maidenhead" is just a symptom of a more generic problem. Or so it would appear.

There's still is congestion on the whole network tho, it appears that most people posting here report falls to ~25-30 on average, globally. I'd be curious to see if people could post "top max" speed reports in that hourly range...

And to answer people who have the "OpenDNS" problem, I don't use them here, I use a local caching DNS proxy (dnsmasq) so the usual DNS latency is negligible on sites I go often (<1ms). I use the google DNS backend behind the caching proxy.

But it comes and goes ... RJ has seen issues on ADSL Max

I have just tried it a few times ... starts of at a nice 35Mb then drops to around 10Mb before a real up and down between the two.

I rarely see a drop in speeds and get fairly closed to what I would expect for the profile. Using BTs speedtest as a base line, I get around 2% greater on TBB, 4% on TBB flash and 8% on speedtest.net (to be expected) - but looking at the TBBmeter and Task Manager graphs they are all very close in level. The only time I see some drop is during the evening peak and then it will only be 1 or 2 Mbps.

Thing is, even when a speedtest server reports low speeds my actual throughput on file downloads is fine, no matter the time of day. Latency is low and consistent too. if there is a problem with the Infinity service I'm certainly not effected.

I asked BusError what speeds he gets on a few links and he never replied. Shame considering he has a fellow Infinity user to compare speeds with on those specific links.

Yes, my OpenDNS problem doesn't seem to be related to the speedtest results. Just tried and got the following

Newbury gives:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1635611664.png

Maidenhead gives:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1635622866.png
OUCH!

OK

Seems Maidenhead is well and truly knackered. From York ... and also remember on a machine using wireless g through 3 brick walls!!

http://speedtest.net/result/1635749469.png

and via ethernet I get ...(logged this as my best from a while ago ... but is typical)

Well unfortunately I wasn't in tonight, so I couldn't really do the checks I expected, but the ping time to bbc are around ~19 and I can't see any 'visible' lag at the minute..

So it could be that it's not systemic; my wife said she's been watching iplayer most of the evening and hasn't noticed anything bad.

Here's my "live" broadband quality monitor. There's a few odd pikes during the day, and a fairly smooth rise in the evening, that looks consistent with some iplayer eating a bit of bandwidth, for example...
