Accessing E-mail from abroad

I'm currently in Australia, and need to reply to some important e-mails, but the SMTP server doesn't seem to accept connections from outside the UK. I know that I can use webmail, but I need to send them from outlook, so that I can keep track of things.

Any ideas how I can get around this?

You need to use the SMTP server of whatever ISP you are connecting to.

If you've got a GMail or Hotmail a/c you can use their secure SMTPs.

If all else fails use webmail access and send a copy of your e-mails to yourself, that way Outlook Express will pick them up.

I guess you are on BT Residential/Consumer, as BT Business accounts tend to work in most locations.


Try using the SMTP server of the ISP ... sometimes it works, sometimes it does not!

Use webmail, BCC it to yourself and then when it arrives move it from the Inbox to your preferrred folder and it will appear there just as if it was sent from your mail account.

I have been in this situation many times and have used both!

I use webmail a lot when travelling.

To overcome your problem, I either -

1) manually move my "Sent" mails to the webmail Inbox so they can be collected by Outlook.
2) bcc with your email so they will appear in your inbox and be collected by Outlook.

You can usually only send using the SMTP of the ISP but can collect any POP3 mail.

If you are connected to another ISP for some time, use their email for sending but in setup change the email to your home email. I also do this at home. My ISP is Plusnet so I have to use this for collecting and sending emails, but I have several email addresses that I use from different ISPs and so I just set up each account with the required outgoing email, even though it is using Plusnet's SMTP.
