With a 44.5dB downstream attenuation and 5.7dB sn margin with ADSL1 a ~6Mbps Max Achievable Speed might be expected and an IP profile of ~5Mbps.

However you are connected via ADSL2 which should increase your Max Achievable speed [ADSL2+ (21CN) with a 44.5 dB downstream attenuation would be ~7.5Mbps and IP profile ~6.5Mbps] perhaps others can comment on how attenuation may be different if one has a ADSL2 and not a ADSL1 connection on the same line.

However your downstream sync is relatively poor, let's hope the engineer has fixed the problem and that your line will settle down in due course.

I dont quite know what is happening as I have heard no more since this morning when the engineer left!
He seemed to think that changing from fast to interleaving may help.

So it all seems a bit up in the air.

Well, another day and still no further contact from BT!
It seems odd that an BT Broadband engineer should spend time at my house and presumably at the cabinet and exchange and then not update me as to whether any faults have been found or not.
If I took my car into the garage because it was running slow, I believe they would attempt to repair it and perhaps inform me as to the problem and whether or not it had been fixed....... wouldn't they?

The engineer's report may be forwarded to your ISP in due course - rather like medical records the patient often doesn't normally see them

Last year I wanted to see an OR SFI engineer's report that had been sent to my former ISP but I never did see it - however the engineer did call me, after he had checked the line on the same day, and gave me some fairly useful snippets of information: "Exchange problem - don't think I've fixed it...possibly x, possibly y..."

Thanks for that info. I have just checked and it seems that my speed is average for this area.
Its a shame that the information given regarding estimated speed when I was signing up to BT was 80% more than I am actually getting!!

Estimate was out because something is odd with the line or your wiring.

Estimate looks to be about right looking at the actual measured attenuation, just equipment is under performing due to noise.

A line problem would be the same on all the providers on that line.

About 30 seconds after my last post, my homehub3 started flashing and I lost my internet. After a couple of minutes, it came back on and when I did a speed test, it seems to have improves a little!
Last night I reset the homehub to see if that would help but to no avail.

The system seems to have reduced your sync-time noise margin to 3dB from the default 6dB, as it has decided it is stable. That has added considerably to your downstream connection speed.

It's worth noting, if you don't already know, that connecting during daylight hours is likely to give you a higher speed (ongoing) than connecting at other times.

We can also see from those stats that you this time it is on ADSL2+, whereas earlier it was ADSL2. The attenuation has risen by a few dB, as it often does on that change. It is possible, (not certain), that if we can find a way of getting you back down to ADSL2 that another few hundred kbps will appear.

Don't go messing a lot though, or it might put you back to a 6dB margin and lose the big gain.
