Re: Moved to BT ADSL - Experience so far not good

Thanks, but with the packet loss rate, no web site will display at all.
In that case the post I'm quoting is a figment of my imagination, as is the whole thread tongue.

Seriously, I'm glad it seems to have been fixed, but in my opinion some fault on another line, that was affecting you and that line, has been reported and sorted out. All sorts of physical connection errors can occasionally occur. Touching wires; loose connections; dodgy batteries; and so on.

From your description of what was happening, I believe your 10-day training was abortive. Those issues are not what is expected during the ten days. Have a read of this page. First line support are very badly trained, (if at all), about this, so are clueless through no fault of their own. They are given an idiotic rule.

You need to ask what your MSR and FTR (explained on that page) are. If they are low, it is essential you have a rerun. As things stand, if you have a stupidly low FTR you will find it almost impossible to get a sensible response if you suddenly get a halving of your speed in the future.

> Are you aware of the 10 day training period?

Of course, having worked on ADSL for ten years. But I was not expecting (and apparently nor was AF) 6 of those days to be unusable.

For those who are still interested, the reduction in speed last night still had a packet loss rate of 20% for full packets and with no reasonable throughput.

I solved the problem by locking the router to ADSL1 as Andrew mentioned. That gives a 6.6dB head room and a negligible loss rate with 1120/8128 sync speed. This is adequate for our needs now it is stable and has defeated the BT training period so we can get some work done.

I don't use BT for my own business and am not writing this from the affected line (just in case anyone is puzzling over other comments) smile

According to the post here http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/zen/t/4161751-it-is... it's the router that's the problem. You say you tried a v4 router with v5 software, but that doesn't sound like it's recommended, it should be a v5 router.

Good spot!

Seeing as the v4 is a Broadcom chipset, and the v5 is a Conexant chipset, eeeeek!

Strange the Netgear Web Site offers me

DG834v4/DG834Gv4 Firmware Version 5.01.16 (All regions except North America and Germany) I have two routers with V5.01.09 in them bought at the same time and one (on a BT provided line) is showing

Connection Speed 18939 kbps 1197 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 db 9.9 db
Noise Margin 2.8 db 5.8 db

and with the line up for 400 hours since the dynamic IP address last changed

What would you recommend?

Do not jump t the conclusion that Router Version number has anything to do with Firmware Version number.

Don't BT provide a modem/router?

I didn't. The post "a newer ADSL2+ V4 DG834G Netgear with V5 software" is highly misleading, because of the way it is put. BatBoy picked up on it, which I hadn't, and we both came to the same conclusion.

The latest post by the OP with the full description of what he is talking about sorts it out. I notice that is 20 mins before your post tongue smile.

As per my reply to flippery a few seconds ago. Your original post implied the firmware was for a DG834v5. (It isn't software by the way, though the difference is subtle).
