However, the OP says "the desktop is connected to the hub" which could imply a wired connection, hence my request for the OP to confirm the situation, as Greenglide asked as well.

what connection speed do the two wireless connections show ? I found someone with an 11M 802.11b wireless connection earlier this week despite the laptop being 11g.
