I was careful to use "credentials" rather than anything like "password". Surely they still use the line's CLID to "authenticate" it?

My understanding from reading the member forum (when I was a customer) was that no, there is no authentication. The physical line is connected to the BE/O2 DSLAM. (nothing to do with CLID that's a POTS term??). No authentication of any sort. That works for BE and O2 customers.

Unless you're a BE wholesale customer then your DSLAM port is configured differently and requires your ISPs credentials - e.g. AAISP.

The authentication is based on the telephone number (or port I believe...), BT use part of this system but still require you logging in to authenticate but is very lenient.

You can use any name before @bt and any password will work etc

Are you aware if the engineers have actually checked anything on your line? Also how was your connection with BE?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes, it is my understanding that their are jumpers that need to be reconnected at the cabinet. I'm basing this on the information the Openreach engineer gave me when he left.

Since I cancelled the Infinity order the most I've been able to get from BT is a line test which come up fine. BE sent an engineer to the exchange but they won't send one to the premises, or the cabinet, untl I've tried a new router which I now need to wait for. I believe that's just a useless delay.

We are discussing authentication, or lack of, with Be/O2 not BT.

The major difference being that BE/O2's network doesn't have to support a lot of different ISPs, whereas BTwholesale's WBC network supports lots of different companies from BT retail, PlusNet, Zen, AAISP, and loads more. A login name/password is probably the only sustainable way of working it.

Ok, but they also handle wholesale customers differently as my text went on to say. 25,000 customers is more than I thought they had.
