I'm not aware of any requirement (mandatory or otherwise) that requires you to use a specific Email Client or Web-Access Browser!
BT have issued some revised T&Cs requiring that all Email Accounts should be checked/read within 150days, but that can be via any chosen Client/Browser.
Please refer to Mr Saffron's post, on this subject:-

i thought Bt sent their spam to their customers via BT yahoo? when I was with Bt a few years back, I asked if they could send any info to another email address, but they said they can only send it via my Bt address. so if they knock people off for not using the email service, how are they going to send their spam?
It was spam, all I used to get was emails telling me I could get Btvision and that sort of thing.

Having just spoken, yes spoken!, to BT it appears the first email was phishing.
However because I use "windows live mail" I will have to "log in" via my browser every 150 days to keep my account open. This is mandatory. They say they will be sending reminders out about 120-130 days, lets hope so. BT and I will be parting company if they close my email account.

This may well be tied up with the big Yahoo hack which has now reached 47 pages on BT's own forum and which appears to be entering a second phase: http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/BT-email...
The annoying thing is that despite hundreds of complaints BT is saying nothing to its many customers who are still being affected.

Polling via POP3, using web mail or if you have an auto-forward set-up all count as using the service, and reset the counter. Don't worry, your email account will keep working as long as:
you continue to log in and use it from your computer email software (such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird)

Whether your right or not ,and I hope you are, this has been very badly handled by BT.
I have an innate mistrust of large firms like BT,Tesco, ect, and so have marked my calendar for 140/150 days from now. Sadly if you are right I wont receive an email reminder and if your wrong and they forget to send one I could lose out.
I wish BT would send out an email with some clarification about this, not "dear customer" but "Mr/Mrs (account holders name)"
I so hope you are right.

How can I not be right? It's in black & white on BT website.
Surely you don't believe what phone CS told you? You know all ISPs' call centres are prone to get things wrong? I bet he wasn't even in UK.

Just refer to the BT information Page (link as per Mr Saffron's original posting):-
Changes to email terms and conditions
From 17 June 2013, the terms and conditions for accessing the email that comes with your BT Broadband BT Yahoo! Mail will change.
All BT Broadband customers have a BT Yahoo! Mail address (usually ending in @btinternet.com or @openworld.com), but not everyone wants to use it. So we've decided to close email accounts that haven't been used for more than 150 days. To do this, we need to change our terms.
After 17 June 2013 we will begin to close email accounts that havent been used for more than 150 days. This will delete the email address and all the contents of the mailbox.
Don't worry, your email account will keep working as long as:
you continue to log in and use it from bt.yahoo.com, or
you continue to log in and use it from your computer email software (such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird), or your mobile email software, or
you have Auto Forward set up.
If you havent used your email account since 18 Jan 2013, or if youre not sure when you last logged in and still want to keep it just log in before 17 June and at least once every 150 days after.
As far I am concerned that means you can access it via ANY Email Program (NOT just Yahoo Web-Mail) and/or have it auto-forwarded! If you do that, you will be complying with BT's requirements will NOT have your A/Cs deleted!

The think is that there is two issues going on here which BT/Yahoo haven't been particulary clear upon.
17th June sees the new 150 day counter coming into effect.
3rd June sees the new web interface coming online and you need to accept new T&C's to allow this. Which is on the BT website.
BT haven't made exactly clear what is going on and even the two webpages on the BT website relating to this aren't being particulary helpful.
If they were going to have two changes in such a close timeframe perhaps just one announcement with a single webpage for help would have been the sensible thing.

Hi thanks for the replies.I'm not sure how I got to asking about this, but I do know I didn't log in to btyahoo either on the link or via my browser.
Links from the original mail go to :- http://email.planing-inc.co.uk/r.emt?h=mrd.mail.yaho...
Links from the reply go to :- http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/ etc
Still not sure it was phishing. But am happy to leave everything as is.
email.planning.inc-co.uk are a company BT use to send out email and to handle stuff like this for quite a few years.
AND they have been REPEATEDLY told to stop sending out phising like emails but until BT actually get off their backside and stop using them I suppose they will still do it.
