Infinity soon.

Long time since I stuck my head in here. How times have changed. Anyway, to the point.

They're testing the Infinity cabinet at the end of my street and we should be enabled any time soon. My question is, when I get my infinity, what, if anything, do I need to change in the house. Currently I have a Linksys WAG320N which works fine for me. An I going to need a new router or socket or power or anything?

Where is your router at present? At the master socket or on an extension?

The Linksys WAG320N does not have a WAN port so will not be of much use - unless someone knows different. You will need a new router that has the capability - if you are happy with your WAG320N then they is likely to be a Linksys router that is similar but with a WAN connection.

How is Infinity presented? As ethernet?

It will depend on exactly which ISP you choose - Infinity being BT's name.

The possibilities:

A BT supplied modem which has an Ethernet output which connects to the WAN input of your own router.

A combined modem and router (Hub) such as the BT Homehub5 and you connect to the Ethernet LAN.

Or you could choose to use your own Modem and Router.


The advantage of a stand alone modem is that it can be near the master socket and you can then place the router where you want and you can choose your preferred router.

As you have posted in the BT section, if you order Infinity you will be supplied with a Homehub5 which is a combined modem/router which has 4 1Gb network ports and Wireless-AC.

Not 100% true. Some Infinity customers are still getting a standard BT modem.

With a router?

I'm with BT (I work for them) but my experience of home hubs in the past has been poor to say the least hence having my own router today. The first option is preferable. Will I get to choose if I ply the engineer with coffee?

Some yes and some no.

You may find thoughput is a bit of a problem with an older router, the PPPOE performance is key.
You can always get an Openreach modem from Ebay.
