Contention

[link to this post]

we live at the end of about 4km of tatty copper/ali line we are lucky to get a reasonable adsl speed of normally 5Mbits down and 0.30Mbits up. however every evening my rate drops to 0.02Mbits down and 0.01 up.
I am assuming this is caused by contention/congestion issues.
I have a dedicated "data" line and only I pc connected via ethernet to the HH4.
Can anyone suggest a way forward to make the evening connection viable

When it does it do you check the router stats haven't changed? It is remotely possible that you are getting affected by high noise levels once it gets dark but that would be a large impact.

Also, use the ThinkBroadband speedtester when it is going slow - this does a single stream test and a 6 stream test - by comparing the 2 it quite often shows up where contention is an issue. Once you've done a test post a link to it here and we can comment.

Hi
Thanks for the reply
The Think Broadband speed test is not useable at those speeds. the ony one that seem sto work is the BT wholesale one
Looking at the HH4 the line stats do not seem to change

If its traditional congestion then should generally be a ramp, noise and faults tend to be more cliff like in the change.

http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest may be a better test when things are slow, it works well enough on slow and high latency connections including inflight wifi.

As requested I did a speed test during the slow period.
That proved to be a struggle to get it completed.
Gere is the result for a slow period

and here is a test result for a "normal" period

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...

As I hope you can see quite a difference

What av software do you use? Kaspersky?

From speed tests contention looks likely, when bad next time turn off router wait 2 minutes and reconnect. Just to see if you end up on a different way through BT network.

We presume you've checked it is not simeone watching video or using wifi and stealing bandwidth?

Yes i do use Kasperky as my AV suite.
There is no one else using bandwidth as this is the only PC switched on at that time and there are no ethernet enabled TVs in the house. We are in a remote area and unless people are hiding in the country side and stealing bandwidth via FON The sole user is me.
I suspect the dogs might sniff out any one close enough
Many thanks for your suggestions.

Okay then Kaspersky explains the spike you get at the start.
