Re: Infinity 2

Well, he got here at 4pm.

Very nice chappie, seemed to know his beans.

The original install engineer had not bypassed the NTE, so this one did that, made absolutely no difference.

Anyway, 3 hours later, having done many many checks and come and gone driving around the estate, we have an answer.

Long Line!

I am one of the first properties as the line comes up the road, but, the line comes up on the other side of the road, does all the houses there, then comes back down my side and I am actually one of the last connected.

So, as the crow flies, the cab is 300m away, in actual fact, the line is over 1KM in length.

He said they should have split the line at the beginning of the estate and ducted it across the road but, Redrow (who apparently installed the cables) did a cheap job.

Anyway, I am now on around 24meg which he says is likely to decrease.

His explanation of my going from 35meg to below 20 was that there have been a substantial number of installs and thus, apparently, far more noise in the cabinet on my cable bundle.

He reckons once the cab is fully utilised I should expect around 12meg.

Next door is on 27meg, but then they are that little bit closer.

So I now have a choice, to keep paying 25quid a month for what may end up as 12meg, or, go back to Sky and pay 3quid a month for around 4meg.

Only other option is to downgrade to infinity 1, which will give me a 2 quid discount.

Welcome to the 21st century smile

Can you post the stats again from Troubleshooting > Helpdesk ? It will be interesting to see what's changed.

Thanks.

I'd say you have plenty of noise margin now, so your speeds will increase, but that attenuation won't get you above Infinity 1 speeds.

Well I have just spoken to BT and have been dropped to the Infinity 1 package, saving a tenner a month.

She said my speed is likely to drop, and if it goes below 20meg they will release me from my contract fee free, but I can't see it dropping just because the package has changed.

Nor me, as it's an accounting change not a technical change.

How many times have we heard that? Be it ducting in the street or internal wiring builders are for ever cutting corners to save a few pence here and there.

If I was you, I would stick with VDSL/Infinity even of it does drop below 20 ... and with an ADSL speed of just 4Mbps I would wait until speeds were approaching 10 o12 before considering reverting.

Yeah given they have lowered my monthly cost to £15 I will stick it out and see what happens for a bit.

Pull off a set of stats every couple of days and keep those logged and run a speedtest from here too. At least you will have data to fall back on if it really does deteriorate.

Having just had the confirmation e-mail, it appears that, unfortunately this is not just an accounting exercise.

It looks like they are going through a re-provisioning and starting over on Infinity 1, but without the engineer install.

Like, as if I am a new broadband customer, rather than just a package switch frown
