Re: Swap HH5 for decent modem

[re: MHC] [link to this post]

In reality, all I want is a decent solid modem and then use the APE for the internal network.

My hope is that I get a more stable connection with a higher sync, although I am not holding my breath.

I really do not like the HH5 anyway.

One final question, as the APE will be providing the DHCP, how will I know the IP address to browse into the modems web interface?

There is a default IP address ... and I cannot remember it. When I have an HG612 installed it has a totally different IP address - permanently assigned and in one of the more unusual ranges.

Someone should be able to tell you.

The default for a hg612 is 192.168.1.1.

You can change this if required after unlocking to meet your networks requirements.

edit: I see it is unlocked already....set your mac IP in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.250 connect a lan cable to lan2 on the hg612....login to the modem (admin, admin)...Change LAN settings to meet your requirements.

Why does he need to set his Mac IP address - that will already be assigned by the network DHCP and should be in te appropriate range.

This is where I may get confused.

Will the APE not assign an IP address to the modem?

Ignore any connection to LAN2 and the modem GUI to start with.

Just connect the Modem DSL port to the phone line and LAN1 to the WAN interface on your APE. Make sure the APE has the logon details and DHCP enabled.

That is all you need to get the set-up working. You can then use the connection as usual.

ONCE YOU ARE WORKING AND HAPPY WITH IT.

Connect another Ethernet cable from LAN2 to a LAN port on the APE, leaving the Mac connected as usual.

Open a browser, and enter the address 192.168.1.1 - you should get a Huawei login screen, use admin for both Username and password. That will take you to a screen with various options and you can then find one with the basic connection stats - I don't have mine connected so cannot tell you which, again someone should be able to guide you.

No, because it is connected to your WAN port not a LAN port. There is no relationship between the default internal IP address of the HG612 and your LAN. If your LAN was 192.168.0.nnn it would still work from the modem aspect.

For the LAN connection from LAN2 to your AEP to see the stats and alter settings if desired then the two subnets do need to be the same, and that is why you have been told to exclude 192.168.1.1 from the DHCP range the AEP can allocate.

If your AEP subnet is not 192.168.1.nnn then we can advise on what to change so you can access LAN2 for the stats. (As shown in my earlier post).

Ok, all good with that, other than:

"Make sure the APE has the logon details"

What logon details?
