HH5 - "Public" Channels

Just out of curiosity!

Because I'm in the process of upgrading to BT Infinity, I've received a HH5, which I've been asked to use immediately onto my existing ADSL2+ (didn't bother with the HH3, that I was previously supplied).

However, I'm surprised that it does NOT appear to be transmitting either of the BT-WiFi or BT-Fon channels (which previous Home-Hubs did)!

Has BT now stopped this idea?

I think you have to go into the setting to opt in. If you had previously opted in with the HH3 connected it may now be confused between the HH5 and BT Central so try opting out then opting back in.

With the HH3, it was auto-connected unless you opted out (opt-out also included opting out of using other BT Wifi locations). Hence it was far easier to leave it as opted-in, but simply use another Modem/Router!!

Back to HH5, although I'm not particularly conversant with the HH5 UI, I can't actually find an option for either opting-in or opting-out!

It will start doing it in it's own sweet time. It's waiting for a command from the central computer.

Yep! Seems to have just started!!

Yay for passers by. Doesn't seem to matter if yours is actually working or not as long as you are opted in you still get access to other peoples'.

I remember being similarly puzzled the other week when I plugged my HH5 in and couldn't find a signal.

Out of interest, does anyone know how secure the public side of the HH is? Is it physically completely separate, or just firewalled off with software?

It's on a separate VLAN I believe, so it's totally isolated from your home network
