Sounds like someone returned it to Amazon after registering it with Netgear and changing the password. Did you try a
Factory reset on it?
That should have made it work, but you'd have had a bit of a problem trying to register it with Netgear if you wanted to. Though that should have been possible with
Proof of Purchase. (Your Amazon transaction).
