020 4xxxxx code for London

Hi does anyone know when BT will offer 0204 code for London ?

According to news articles they were going to start taking business orders for them from October with new numbers going live from December. Have you tried contacting BT to order one?

When they run out of numbers in the 0203 (0207/08) range.

So far they haven't been allocated any ranges ( Only 12 have been issued so far,. Most are to IP operators).

Companies have to pay per number for each range so BT will only request an additional range when they have exhausted their existing allocation.

Don't confuse OFCOM allocating ranges to operators, which started in Oct 19, with BT providing new 0204 numbers to customers, they have no 0204 ranges allocated to them yet

They are only likely to request a range if they have a large customer that requires 4000 plus numbers in one range or they run out of single numbers for their IP based service.

The code for London is 020 just three digits.

The 4 just opens up a further block of ranges within that area code the same as the original 7xxx xxxx and 8xxx xxxx blocks followed by 3xxx xxxx and at some time in the future there may be another, maybe 5, maybe 6 although probably not 9 or 2 and certainly not 1.

Unless of course they make the whole of 020 national dialling only, like they have with 020 0 and some other area codes. Then the first digit becomes less of an issue.

The 020 0 and 020 1 numbers are a bit of an oddity - unlikely to be dialled or for use on outgoing only.

As you may know, problem with using a block starting with 1 is that there are so many service numbers - 100, 118xxx, and more.

So true, I suspect going from 2+8 to 0+10 dialling format will work around most of that and for London, forcing such dialling rules may be a long time off. It may even become a moot point in future as most people are used to dialling full numbers on mobiles so could become the standard before long regardless of number shortages in some areas or not.
