Connecting Smart Hub 2

[link to this post]

Hi all

I haven't been around here for a while for those that know me as a former regular on TBB forums

Been happily enjoying FTTP and BT Fibre Home phone for some years now
Currently using HH 3 with normal corded phone plugged in to the ONT

Smart Hub 2 arrived a few weeks ago and I've been trying to get my head around everything

Helpfully BT advise you can use the power adapter from your existing BT router with the Smart Hub 2
I'll have to spend hours dismantling to get to the the power sockets where the HH 3 is plugged in

I'm wary however of the age of the HH 3 and potentially bricking the Smart Hub 2

I've got wifi issues and need to change the HH3 over as soon as possible as I work from home and people cannot hear me properly on the softphone as the line keeps cutting out
I'm thinking the age of the HH3 probably isn't helping

Am I missing something here? BT tell you that you can use the existing power adaptor. Where will the responsibility lie if you plug the new SH2 into the existing power adaptor? And if it does get bricked, who will be responsible for supplying a replacement for a piece of kit that was treated in line with the supplier's recommendation?

And again if it does get bricked you still have the existing HH3 which you can use to maintain service while BT make good.

Hi there, nice to read from you again !

Did the new Smart Hub 2 not come with its own power supply in the box ??

Or am I reading your post wrong ?

The new router should run rings around the wifi performance of the 3. If coverage is still flakey on the extremities, the ‘whole home wifi discs’ are a good thing too for boosting coverage.

You're reading the post wrong. The problem is they can't easily get to the socket where it is plugged in so it would be simpler for them just to use the existing cable.

BT have said use the cable and they own the SH2 so would have to replace it if it went wrong, especially if it went wrong by following their instructions. So, as the other responder said the OP may as well just use the existing cable (the bigger risk to the OP though would be if they think the plug could become a fire risk due to age - that would be my concern over any risk of bricking the SH2).

Correct
And yes I'm a little concerned that the existing power adapter could become a fire risk due to it's age

Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and move everything to get access

Thank you for the correction. And agreed, I wouldn’t use the power supply from 3 with a Smart Hub 2

Was migrated on 9th November and connected the SH2 up on 13th November with the new power adapter in place
All working beautifully
Phone definitely doesn't work connected to the ONT
As only my Mum and scammers call on my landline, being without a phone for a few days wasn't an issue
Tested everything and the phone was ringing connected to the SH2
Filter used for the first time in many years - thanks to all my time here I thought of that one
Definite improvement with wifi using the SH2
Now to negotiate a retention deal

Adapter I ordered finally arrived on 18th November
Link to get a compatible phone doesn't recognise my number - a common issue I hear
Will have to call to get that sorted

I assume that is a BT system not recognising the number.

It is worse for me in some ways ... it does recognise the number and puts me in a queue which can be 30-40 minutes and then when I get through, I am connected to BT Residential/Consumer rather than Business so a transfer is needed with a short maybe 5 minute wait - so a wasted 30-40 minutes on hold!

And as you say SH2 WiFi is an improvement - I'm currently using one as my FTTP is down and I don't want to reconfigure the network too much and the 2.4GHz is extremely good - I have about 6 SH2s sitting here unused!

I know you’re a bit of a BT fan @MHC, but even that’s taking it to an extreme! 😅😎
