ST546v5: overall recommended firmware version

[link to this post]

I'm thoroughly fed up with waiting for retailers to stock the Speedtouch 546v6 so, after much soul-searching, will shortly be ordering a 546v5 instead.

I've been away from these forums for a few weeks so, rather than me ploughing through pages and pages of recent 'conversations' about the 546 to find the latest concensus, would I be correct in saying that the optimum firmware version to use with the 546v5 is 5.4.0.14? I seem to recall some users saying some time ago that, with the 546v5, earlier versions of the firmware gave less stable and more error-prone results, whereas later versions of the firmware than 5.4.0.14 weren't fully compatible with the DMT utility.

The impression I got increasingly, though, was that there wasn't total agreement on which was actually the best version of firmware to use and, indeed, that some users had changed their minds about it several times, having subsequently had more extended experience with the 546v5.

I might add that I'm not intent on trying to screw the last ounce of speed out of my 546v5, when I get it - I'm more concerned instead with getting good stability. With DMT, I'll probably set my target SNR to 10 or 12dB.

I can't comment on the 5.4.14 firmware as I went straight to the 6.1.4.7 and it is totally stable and a vast improvement on 5.4.11 (The UK speedtouch official version I think that is the reference)
The only downside is that it doesn't support the data gathering using DMT but you can still modify the snr at synch.

Thanks, OldJim. Hmm, perhaps I should get the 546v5 first and then worry about which firmware to install. It seems there's still conjecture over which version to install, depending on which particular features are required.

6.1.4.7 is totally stable, then? Anyone disagree with that?

if you dont care about the graphs in dmt go for 6.1.4.7 everyone here says its great so I would take their word for it, I am still using 5.4.0.14 because I need the graphs in dmt. 6.1.4.7 is still able to tweak the snr. I will probably end up going to 6.1.4.7 eventually as well.

5.4.0.14 is way better then 5.4.0.11 but someone here says they used both 5.4.0.14 and 6.1.4.7 and said 6.1.4.7 is still better then 5.4.0.14.

I've used both, and 6.1.4.7 certainly seems to be more stable.

I presume that the 6.1.4.7 firmware to which you've all referred is a version firmware normally intended for 5x6v6 Speedtouches. Correct? And that presumably there's only one around. From where can I download 6.1.4.7?

No, it's for v5 5x6 hardware.

its for v5, the v6 users are lucky they got a 6.1.4.3 which is the same except the dmt graphs still work on it.

I am going to try 6.1.4.7 myself today to see if I get any significant improvement.
