WRT54GS any good ?

[link to this post]

Currys is doing a great deal on a Linksys Wireless Networking High Speed Router and USB Adaptor and was just wondering how good this adsl router really is.

1) Can it run in NAT & NON NAT (Routed Mode) at the same time ?
2) How stable is the Wifi in mixed b/g mode ?
3) Is it a VPN Server as I think it does VPN Passthrough but would like to have VPN Server capabilities.

Thanks

it isn't an ADSL router, it has an ethernet WAN port.

are you sure ?, just from the info I get from linksys-sales.co.uk website:

'the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection'

It has an ethernet WAN port and requires a DSL modem to be able to share a DSL connection.

I understand that if you go into an actual PCWorld they have them on the "if you're with Telewest/NTL you need something off this shelf" shelf - though I can't comment on the veracity of that because I've not set foot in a DSG Store for well over 4 years... Being spun blatant untruths about products mixed with high prices and disinterested staff isn't an attraction to me.

US-centric product labelling - "broadband router" combined with your ISP-supplied DSL or cable modem would be the norm there.

The 54GS is without a dout not an ADSL modem product. It would be a WAGxyz if it had a modem.

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk is fairly clear about what kit does what.

Be warned that the versions DSG are selling are almost certainly the lobotomised VXWorks variant - which tends to have reduced RAM/flash, as well as an inability to run (the majority of) the third party firmware that made the WRTs quite as popular as they were.
Some folks have reported issues with stability, but YMMV.
