ST 585 v6 speed any good without tweaking

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Is the ST 585 v6 exceptional/better than average when hooked up out of the box (ir no SNR Margin tweaking and not DMT tool etc). I found it synced up at 2700 on my line , compared to 2400-2500 for Smartax MT882 (Talk Talk), both reported similart attenuation (59db) and SNR Margins (6-9Db).

Cheers

Hmm - I'm also looking at this router... Will it do IP pass through and NAT disable allowing for public IP addresses on the LAN side?

The specs look like it might, but then so did the 3com and that turned out not to be able to.

Many people think this router gives superior performance on longer lines.

Hmm, I'm just looking at the figures (ie not using it with anger) but the 2wire 2700HGV synced higher out of the box than the AOL branded ST 585 v6 I had (fw 6143). whilst holding a stable connection. Both reported similar attenuation (59Db) and SNR Margin. (6-9)

So far
2wire = 3300-3448 sync stable
ST 585(AOL) 2700 sync stable
MT882(Talk Talk) 2200-2500 sync stable

The downside with the 2wire is that its LAN routing options are a bit lame so I may bridge it with a WRT54G/ddwrt. My last attempt at bridging (MT882) seemd to stop the 2nd half of a speedtest.net test!

Quite possibly it was better. The problem with routers is that nobody (with the possible exception of Which magazine) tends to buy that many of them. Over the years I've tried an SMC 7404, D-Link DSL-504, D-Link DSL-604T, D-Link 300T, Connexant PAE84, Netgear DG834, and Speedtouch 546v5. None of them have been absolutely outstanding compared to the others - the D-Links were the most unstable, with the best (DSL504) and the worst software (DSL 604T and 300T), whilst the Speedtouch 546's have been the most stable (especially when used with P2P) and seem to be able to squeeze the last drop out of a DSL Max connection.

Out of the box I found the sync rate to be about the same as my Belkin (and my BRAS profile is unchanged) but the SNR margin is a lot more stable (and slightly higher I think).

Thinking of changing up to ST 716 WL v5. Anyone have experience using it and will it handle BE' s 16 MB/sec download?

I got a 585v6 today and line speeds seem comparable to the Linksys WAG354G v2 I've been using. Around 5600kbps with 6db noise margin in the evenings with line att of 49dB.

My ADSL line isn't brilliant, but whereas the Linksys might record 1,000,000 FEC errors in any 24 hr period and is perfectly usuable, the 585v6 is racking them up at a rate of 2,000,000 FEC errors in first 4hr period. I've also noticed internet access to stall on occasions may be because of these high FEC errors with the 585 whereas it wasn't a problem with the linksys.

I've now started using the DMT tool to increase the target noise margin at the expense of a lower line speed to try and reduce the number of these FEC errors.

I've only had my 585v6 with v6.1.4.3 firmware less than a day, and u could be right about the internet access problems being unrelated to FEC errors.

Today, I discovered the router has rebooted itself a couple times so far. I don't think line sync is the problem. Event log only shows events since the last reboot which is a pain so there is no clue what caused the reboot.

I've now done a factory reset and have just entered the minimum of settings and will see how it behaves for the rest of the day. Today, I've set up time server settings so I can now monitor when the last reboot looked like it occured.

I'm inclined to go back and use my Linksys WAG354G v2 which seems to be a lot less trouble compared to the grief this 585 is giving me. I had originally hoped a 585 would solve the line resync problems I see once or twice a day with the linksys but so far the 585 is not looking too good.
