I'll make sure i go for the ST585 v6 just incase the (i) is the ISDN one as some people in this discussion said it's no different but to make sure i'll go for the one without the (i).

DSLDepot and DSLSource are both the same company.

DSLDepot sells B-Grade, Used, and Discontinued kit. What that means is that the products you purchase from them may have been shop soiled, purchased and then returned (sometimes unwanted, unused), or even just a product that has come to the end of its line and replaced by something else.

It's up to you really...Spend

Felt I should respond to this. The information I gave was not wrong, as far as I can see.

A detailed search of the Speedtouch site produces only one Speedtouch 585 v.6. Sometimes it is called the 585, sometimes 585(i). (eg., the datasheet from which this spec. is copied says 585(i), but is 585 in the URL).

It is not an either or situation, ie., one does POTS, the other ISDN. The one router does both, as the specification listed below shows.

I think it's also worth mentioning that the warranty on B-grade is only 28 days.

Taken from a 585v6 installation manual:
In reply to:

DSL variants
The Thomson Gateway comes in two ADSL variants:
> POTS: The Thomson ST585(v6) connects to an analogue Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) line.
> ISDN: The Thomson ST585(v6)i connects to an Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) line, enabling
residences with an ISDN line to use the ADSL service.
You can easily identify your variant by checking the product name printed on the label on the bottom of your
Thomson Gateway.
! Do not remove or cover the label.
The ... variant supports ...
POTS ....ADSL
.............ADSL2
.............ADSL2+
.............RE-ADSL
ISDN .....ADSL
.............ADSL2
.............ADSL2+
! Only use the Thomson Gateway variant which is appropriate for the DSL service provided to your
premises.

Which clearly states there are two variants - only one of which will work on a UK system. There will be significant difference in the actual interface.

Just do not buy a v5.

This version was effectively declared obsolete within Thomson as soon as the v6 was produced, and there have been no firmware updates since v5.4.4 in April last year. In May the v5 was still being sold in the UK as the current product.

This means that there will be no further updates to the firmware, e.g. to fix the digest authentication problem with IE7 or to take advantage of improved handling of poor lines. Both these have been delivered for the v6.

You might like to try asking Thomson SpeedTouch Support whether they will update the v5 firmware, but if you can actually persuade them to answer the question you are a better man than I am... They simply ignore the question or do not reply at all. We can only assume not.

But the only real difference with the items that UK ebay sellers seem to have is the fact that the box says (i) and they put that in the description. My Speedtouch box says (i) but my v6 works fine. You'll probably find that in practice 585's for the UK market are put in the same boxes as the (i) version.

If you want to buy from eBay why not ask:-

"Does this modem/router work on a normal telephone line with a standard ADSL service not an ISDN line?"

If the answer is "Yes" and when you receive the goods that is not the case you can claim a full refund as the goods are not as described.

That isn't the e-bay service I have experienced. Make sure you get any such assurances in e-mail or text form.

I have many times used "Ask seller a question". You then have the answer "in writing" verifiable by eBay if necessary.
