The trouble is that what works well for one person may be totally different for the other. My experience of that Netgear was that it was awful and completely unstable. And therefore I'd say buy the SpeedTouch (65 days uptime curtailed only by a powercut).

But for some the Netgear is a rock and is perfectly fine. You won't know till you take the plunge unfortunately

my 585 was stable and wireless was good too, plus you can use the DMT tool to gett a better sync speed.

I think the general view is that the ST is a more stable router, though some no doubt are quite satisfied with the Netgear.
Many, like me, have found an improvement switching from the Netgear to the ST, but I don't know of any who've found an improvement switching the other way.
I'd get the Speedtouch.

They are both good routers and at that price offer exceptional value.

I have a 585 V6 and even with the latest firmware it will, now and again, 'choke' and even though my connection is still there with UKO at 12mb it needs a reboot to resolve the issue of slow performance.

The Netgear 834GT that I have is very good and is stable at 12mb.

I also have a Billion 7402VGP and that is the BEST of them all. It has a coding gain feature that when I set it to 7 makes my connection stable at 14mb. It also has a setting to increase the wireless signal strength, which I have found useful.

However the Billion is not

'Raising the coding gain' is the same as lowering the target SNR margin, which the DG834GT also allows but to a much greater extent. Have you tried the DMT tool with the Netgear, which provides a GUI for doing this?

No I haven't - thanks for letting me know about DMT - I haven't used that since the Speedtouch firmware prevented it from working, I will try it out.

I have noticed that there are two modified firmwares for the Netgear GT router....

http://dragonslight.altervista.org/ubergt/

I haven't tried those yet either.

Edit : Got version 8.06 of DMT installed for the Netgear, by using the special login feature. Not sure, from what I see, what I would need to do...?

Oh hum.
