Downloading at 0.1Mbps on Broadband

[link to this post]

I'm using a 3com OfficeConnect ADSL Router bought new in Feb 07 for my first time connection to Broadband.

ISP is Newnet

PC is a P4 3ghz Pentium with 512mb RAM

Here's a link to the speed tests I've run;

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/118168431871330924930.html

I tried to run a test on the BT Speedtester twice tonight and got 'The system is currently busy. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider'

I'm using the Router wired, not wirelessly

I currently have the following green lights on the router;
Power
Sync
Online (steady at the moment, but wasn't earlier tonight)
WLAN
Port 1

Looking at the Router GUI (is that the correct term ?)
Software Version 1.00.00
Data Rate: Upstream 448kbps, Downstream 6208kps
Operation Data: Upstream: Noise Margin 24db, Attenuation 49db
Operation Data: Downstream: Noise Margin 2147483647db, Attenuation 43db

Hardware Status
Port Speed Duplex
LAN Port #1 No Link No Link
LAN Port #2 No Link No Link
LAN Port #3 No Link No Link
LAN Port #4 100 Full Duplex

None of the above means anything to me, but that big figure on Downstream Noise looks a bit odd ? And why does it show port 4 operating when only port 1 is plugged in.

Do hope someone technical can help me here, as I'm feeling a bit desperate.

The large figure is, IIRC, a negative figure being misreported by the router.

Have you been through any line diagnostics with Newnet? The first thing that I would try is to connect the router via the test socket behind the faceplate of the BT master socket - see HERE, to cut out possible problems with internal wiring, incorrect filtering, etc.

Thanks for that. I'll try it when I get home tonight.

Just done another test this morning, and got 3.2mbps. This is what it's like though, up and down.

I've undone the BT Master Socket, but I seem to have an old type socket which doesn't have a test socket, as described in the DSL Zone UK article.

I checked the wiring connections and I only have 2 and 5 connected, as recommended.

2 is a Light Blue wire
5 is an Orange wire

However, in the extension socket in my bedroom, where the PC is, I have 3 wires, Red, Blue and Green connected. The article says the wires should be the same colour in the extension as they are in the Master Socket, and that only two wires should be connected,

So what next ?

Forgot to say,

I connected a standalone extension between the Modem and the BT Master Socket.

I then ran a speed test via the BT Speedtester, and it was succesful this time, wheras before I got an error message. Does this mean anything with regard to the extension line ?

The Test 1 results were;

IP Profile for line = 3500kbps
DSL connect rate = 448kbps Upstream, 5888 Downstream
Actual IP throughput = 3128kbps

In reply to:

Possibly, but this is a one-off result - you need to check if this improvement continues over a period of time.

Do you have all phones/faxes/alarms/Sky boxes, etc., which are attached to your BT line, filtered?

The only thing which is unfiltered should be your modem/router (the RJ11 side of a microfilter is unfiltered, while the 'BT plug' side is filtered), therefore you should ensure that any extension which you use is not filtered before the modem/router attaches to it., as per the diagrams in the link which I gave.

Thanks Baldur

As far as things attached to the phone line go, we only have a recently bought Panasonic 3 set DECT phone attached. The base unit is connected via the microfilter.

At the moment, I still have it all plugged into the standalone extension, but normally I have it connected via a surge protector which has RJ11 and BT Input and Output sockets.

Is there anywhere on the net, which shows exactly how I should have the surge protector wired up ?

Does broadband improve if you disconnect and switch off your DECT kit?
