Netgear DG834GT vs another Netgear DG834GT

Brought another dg834gt as it was on auction last few mins on ebay and was only at £6! thought ideal for a spare, got it installed it, stats from current dg834gt router are:


ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2923 kbps 687 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.0 db 38.0 db
Noise Margin 5.5 db 5.3 db

New (same) router:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3323 kbps 683 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.0 db 38.0 db
Noise Margin 5.8 db 5.8 db

Both routers are set to ADSL2 modulation due to long line along with exactly the same firmware on and connected within 5 mins of each other to try and maintain consistancy.

Any ideas why there is such a difference in speeds?

I can also set the new router to a 10% noise margin and it gives me

Connection Speed 3838 kbps 683 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.0 db 38.0 db
Noise Margin 4.3 db 5.8 db

That has now been stable for 24hrs, I have basically gained half a mb, from 2.8 - 3.3mb just by using extactly the same router, any explanation?!

Hardware age and exposure to transient voltages on the BT network probably accounts for the difference in stats.

Well i'm glad i got the other router, giving me about a 25% increase in speed, downloading now at 380kBs instead of 300.

Synching at different times of day is enough to explain the difference.

That would be true if the op had left a gap between syncs but the first two were apparently very close together so unlikely to be the day / night difference.

Missed that bit. I would still like to see many more synchs from each box before accepting it was not just a random difference - say ten times for each box.

tbh cba I have been monitouring my connection at my new house after rewiring a new master socket for the last 5/6 months. The connection speed has always been pretty much similar regardless of times of day, monitouring with router stats lite.

Happy with new speed, no need for wasting or exerting any more energy, statistics speak volumes, speed is faster & it is still stable, win win.

Yes same dgteam firmware too, out of the 3 I used 23o, although I am not entirely sure what the difference is between that 22c and 26.

I swear I got a replacement DG834GT and my Attenuation increase by like 8-9db. Duno what has caused this.
