Technicolour 585v8 or 582n

[link to this post]

Given a choice between a Technicolour 585v8 and a 582n which would you pick and why?

I would only recommend these routers if you have a good short line to the exchange as on long lines they drop
The Technicolour 585v8 is better ventilated then the v7 as for the 582 n i haven't tried that as yet

Alas, my line is 6.1km long with 63db attenuation.

At the moment I mainly use my 585v7 which has been much better since I applied the latest 8.2.6.5 firmware update about a year ago. I also have a DGN2200. I think that the 585v8 and the 582n are possibly available FOC from Plusnet if I agree to stay with them for another year, so I was wondering about getting one.

The 582n. Has a Broadcom chipset which is better on longer lines, despite other posts.

The 585 v8 has an Infineon chip which isn't as good.

I picked up a brand new PlusNet 585 v8 2 days ago and it works perfectly. It was plugged in 2 days, 19 hours, 40 minutes ago and here are the stats since:

The Linksys appears to have a Broadcom chipset but the TP Link seems to have a TrendChip, which isn't as good.

Thanks matt
So correct me if I'm wrong it's the broadcom chip set which is currently the one to go for when purchasing a new router ?

It does depend on your line - but a Broadcom chipset transformed things for me! smile

Thanks for your input
I myself at this time are trialling a range of routers and like i do tv's and other av from time to time the difference may appear small but a drop out in a router is the equivalent to your TV picture glitch on free view

It depends on what tuner chip set you have in most cases and how far you are away from the transmitter

One example sumsung and lg tv's glitch in my house badly where as Panasonic and sony don't

Very interesting that routers could be just the same it would be nice if someone here who has the knowledge to compile a list of router brands along with what chip sets they have in them as it would save the public a whole load of time from purchasing the wrong one and having to return it

It seems simple. Broadcom chip is the way to go.

It may seam simple for some but you need to be able to expand on the reason as to why the broadcom chip is better ?

Why, the way these things work is actually very complex. Ultimately it is the performance, rather than the technical reason for the performance that matters. (Given similar costs.)

Thanks Michael
So at the current time the broad com chip is Superior to the rest on the market
I must admit my linksys router runs very cool
Thanks for your input smile

Had a TG585v7 connected to BE* 53-55dB attenuation and it was not so good. Have had a TG582n for a week and it has been very good. I think my ISP kit in the exchange has a Broadcom chip, so the same brand in the modem may be helping...
