They both need to be configured for optimal operation. It's been ages since I've done it and I've forgotten how, I'm afraid. There are plenty of tutorials on t'internet (and utilities that claim to do it all for you). If your router's MTU size is lower than what Windows (or other kit) is using, then packet fragmentation may occur, which is probably not a good thing.
