Netgear DG814 and MSN Messenger

[link to this post]

I have a Netgear DG814 wired router with the latest firmware providing network and internet services for 3 computers. I have had this router for many years now without too many problems... until now.

Whenever i try to do somthing substantial with MSN Messenger such as sending a file or starting a Video Call (just messaging seems to be ok), the router will lock up, cutting off the internet connection. It wont even give me access to the setup page so the only thing i can do is manually switch it on and off.

Help please! anyone any ideas as to why and/or how to fix this?

It's a UPNP issue. It used to happen to my old DSL-500. If you disable UPNP in the router config then MSN won't lock your router but you'll lose your ability to do video/voice via MSN.

Have you checked that you have the UPNP framework properly installed on your PC?

I did look for that and it was disabled.... (well the 'switch upnp on' checkbox was unticked).

Plus i actually want to be able to use the Video function on messenger.

thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm pretty sure it's UPNP related so ticking the box might help. Video/Audio won't work without UPNP being enabled so its worth a go.
