D Link wireless ADSL router

I'm changing to wireless and I have a BT line. I have done a bit of research online and went in to PC World and the guy recommended the D Link wireless ADSL router which comes with the USB dongle. He said the range was up to 10m which is plenty for me. My only phone socket is downstairs and I run one desktop upstairs probably only 4-5metres max.

I was on Tiscali BB but had loads of problems so they are cancelled - so need a new ISP on 1 November. Has anyone had experience of this router?
I was told to avoid Belkin. thnks.

10m in the open air, maybe. I have problems getting wi-fi to go more than 20 feet in my house which has solid brick walls. PC-World should not give out this sort of misleading information.

Ah wireless.

It's to hard to judge how far the signal can go due to what walls your house has internally and if the signal needs to go through a tiled bathroom.

You may be best looking at the 'new' MIMO supported routers for the best range.

Likewise I'd avoid D-Link (or delink as they're referred to amongst my colleagues given the huge number of dropouts experienced on D-Link WLAN kit) and Netgear (awful support function)

Which leaves you with Linksys, Thomson Speedtouch, BT & 3Com of the major consumer brands (if excluding Belkin - I'd say good choice to avoid lol).

I've not used a Linksys myself, but they are now a division of Cisco (like Aston Martin is a division of Ford) so in theory at least they should have the pedigree.

Thomson Speedtouch are long standing DSL providers to the UK - being chosen by BT when they initially rolled out the 512k ADSL to the country. Good solid routers and not too pricy.

BT actually rebrand some decent performing kit in my experience - I hate BT with a passion but the Voyager 2110 I have at present has outperformed my expectations and it's predecessor considerably. Hell they even answered presales questions by return of email.

My 3Com would still be here today if NEDL hadn't shoved a spike down my mains which fried the router - in my experience great support if there's something wrong.

i recently got a new dlink dsl-g624t and i had several problems with it until i upgraded firmware now its working perfectly (i havent used the wireless part of it as yet as we already had ethernet cables going to all our 4 computers)
but i will be building a new one as a media centre which i intend to use the wireless link on i will let you know how ithat goes when i do.
connnected on adsl2+ at full 8 meg where my old adsl1 router could only sync at 6meg.
so i am really happy with it.

Which provider is that ADSL2+ with then ?

currently with eclipse on a max connection ( llu exchange)
but want to move to 'Be' soon as i can (sometime in january i hope when they do my exchange)
eclipse is using throttling on downloads during daytime so p2p speeds are [censored] until late at night so much for unlimited evolution 4 package ;(
Be does an unlimited 24meg connection for less than i am paying now

So your connection is still ADSL1 then at this point in time ?

I had a dlink 604T and the wireless range wasn't brilliant, but this is in an old house with a copper cylinder in the way. Pretty reliable otherwise but the GUI was sluggish. If you must have good wireless, belkin mimo kit seems to get good reviews.

I've been happy with the DLink routers I've had over the past few years.

Started with a 604+ which was rock solid - only upgraded for faster wireless speeds, so I've kept it as a backup.

Then moved to a Speedtouch 585 - despite the good reviews, I was disappointed as it kept dropping the wireless connection and after a month of buying it, it started to power cycle randomly. The replacement I was sent did the same.

So I cut my losses, and went back to DLink - the G624T which at the mo seems fine.
