failing router?

hi all,

I currently have a D-Link DSL-G604T which I've had for a couple of years I suppose.

the main problem with it is that when it loses sync (I'm with Plusnet so it happens more than I'd like it to but that's another discussion) it wont automatically re-sync. I have to cycle the power, which is [censored] annoying!!

the last couple of days another issue has surfaced on a number of occasions. Lets just say I'm browsing a site, ebay for example...the ebay site will work perfectly..but I can't access ANYTHING else...no other site is available...just ebay. If I'm on myspace and the same thing happens, then only the myspace site is available....nothing else...can't do a ping or a tracert, it just tells me that the target cannot be resolved

The only way to get it back seems to be cycle the router power again.

so, it's possible my router is going to be giving up the ghost soon.

has anyone got any ideas what I could do to fix it?

or failing that, a replacment? (tough question I know considering how many options I have and each to his own)

doesn't need to be fancy, just a wireless modem/router that works!!

just a wild stab here but have you checked your dns settings ?
you might need to check with your isp for the dns server ip addresses and put them in manually on your router. this may help with the 'target cannot be resolved' problem

also i am assuming you have the latest firmware updated on your router. dlink will have a list on their website for your model.
i have the dlink dsl-g624t and i had to upgrade its firmware to stop it locking up and disconnecting just like yours seems to be doing.
mine is working fine now.
check the log to see if it gives you any clues as to what is actually happening when it loses sync.
also check the wires in your house that carry your adsl from the main phone socket to your router. bad connections /interference could cause the sync problem as well.
you dont say what your router syncs at or what your snr is. if your snr fluctuates wildly then you are probably looking at a bad connection somewhere on the phone cables.
try plugging directly into the test socket on your master phonebox (you need to unscrew the faceplate to find it ) also try using an old style modem cable with a phone connector one end and an RJ45 connector the other to do this just to see if its the filter causing a problem. if your snr is much higher in the test socket you know where the problem is
hopefully that has given you a few options to try if nothing else.
if you dont find anything wrong then copying your routers log when it has gone wrong and putting it up here might give one of the more techie types a chance of solving your problem
