Setting Up Speedtouch 546

Hello all,

Have caved in and bought a Speedtouch 546 from eBay, but have no idea how to get it going.

I downloaded the setup software from the internet, but when it "searches your network for your SpeedTouch" it fails with the error:

"The Wizard was unable to find any SpeedTouch devices on your network." It asks me to check I've got no firewalls, I'm plugged in, and I have TCP/IP installed with a valid IP address.

I have it plugged in with a solid green ADSL and Ethernet light, and I have Norton and Windows Firewalls disabled. I have no idea at all if I have TCP/IP installed, nor how to check.

Can anyone help?

Looks like I posted in haste; it was a motherboard ethernet driver snag, nothing to do with Speedtouch.

Question 2 then; how do I tell what version of 546 hardware I have? v5 or v6?

Go to the modem setup HTML front page, and click on the "Information" link.

You'll see something like:

Product Name: SpeedTouch 5x6
Serial Number: CPxxxxLLLLL
Software Release: x.x.x.x
Software Variant: CW
Boot Loader Version: 1.0.18
Product Code: xxxxxxxxxx
Board Name: BANT-?

Look at the last line. If it's BANT-J, it's a V5. If it's BANT-V, it's a V6.

Different chipset. The v5 is superior - allegedly !
