Ring wire in sockets terminal 3

I have a master and 2 extension sockets,checking the 2 extensions the downstairs one has 2 wires in terminal 3 green and orange,the upstairs one has just one green wire in terminal 3,i have not checked master yet for ring wire.Is it safe to remove all wires in terminal 3,i was wondering about the 2 wires in terminal 3 in one of the sockets.These extension sockets are the oldest about 25 years old.

Remove all the ring wires from all sockets, but make sure all the phones ring when you've finished. They should, because all ADSL filters should contain their own ring capacitor, but some of the cheaper ones do not. You only need wires in terminals 2 and 5 on each socket.

P.S. this page will explain why some sockets have 2 ring wires, and some only have 1.

In my mothers case removing the 3 wire proved to be the difference between her broadband working and not working.
With the 3 wire connected her broadband would just about function during the daytime but would lose sync at around 5pm and that was it until the morning after.

Can the ring wire be put back if it causes problems without it and is it easy.

So long as you lift it away from the terminal, rather than snip it off (so you don't leave a bit of cable clogging up the terminal).

I never asked how easy it comes out does it need just a little tug,well infact as my above post says in one socket there are 2 wires in terminal 3 green and orange.i will not snip them off.

With a little wiggle, the wires should lift straight out of the terminal.

You will need a phone cable IDC insertion tool like this disposable one from Maplin. They misname it an "IPC" tool. The correct name is "Insulation Displacement Connector Tool" (the Maplin FAQ is wrong on this point).

A disposable tool is appropriate if you are only going to do 2 or 3 insertions. The cheapest proper metal tools are about

The wiring may not have been done by a professional, so the colours could well be different. You should remove all the wires on terminal 3.
