Bug in SpeedTouch 6.2.15.5 firmware?

I've just updated my Speedtouch 585's firmware because the firmware I was using before (6.1.4.3) kept coming up with an 'idle timeout' error which meant that I had to keep rebooting the router every time it happened and over the last few days this was happening with increasing regularity

For example, yesterday this happened 3 times!

It's too early to say if this newer firmware (6.2.15.5) suffers from the same problem but so far it's okay apart from not being able to use the DMT Tool

I do think that there is a bug with the 'Data Transferred' section as mine is stuck on zero (see below)

Does anyone else using the 6.2.15.5 firmware also suffer from this 'bug'?


Also as a result of me having a few isssues upgrading to the new firmware, my noise margin has been increased to 9 dB so just to jog my memory could someone please remind me how long my router needs to maintain an uptime in order for the DLM to reduce my noise margin by 3 dB (which would put me back on the 6 dB default) and also whether this happens 'on the fly' or whether I would need to manually resync the router after that period of time is up?

I can't cheat and use the DMT tool to reduce my SNR margin with the slider (as explained above).

I just realised that the bug mentioned above is well know.

I discovered that if I go into the 'Internet Services' option then the data transferred stats are there.


p.s. I still wouldn't mind some advice with this though

Is this the ST585 v6 you have as i am buying one of these and i hope to use DMT with it but your saying it doesn't work with it now, sorry to go off topic a bit but that as interested me now.

The 585v6 is a fantastic router and works very well with long lines like mine so don't be put off

I'm saying that the firmware version 6.1.4.3 is prone to an 'idle timeout' error which involves rebooting the router to get online again.

This used to happen infrequently but over the course of the last few days, this has happened a few times a day.

In an attempt to get rid of the problem I have upgraded the firmware to 6.2.15.5 which unfortunately isn't compatible with the DMT Tool.

It's not a big deal as in time my SNR margin will go back down to the 6 dB default after BT's DLM must have misinterpreted my firmware update as an unstable line after I stupidly couldn't decide what to do and so I first of all upgraded and then decided to go back to the old 6.1.4.3 version but after suffering from more timeouts I finally decided to stick with 6.2.15.5 but as this happened in a short period of time, BT's DLM kicked in and increased my SNRM to 9 dB.

You're using an out of date firmware. 6.2.15.5 (or 6.2.F) was replaced with 6.2.16.3 (or 6.2.G).

I'm afraid that The zero "Data Transferred" bug is
as old as FirmWare v5.3.3.4... As for v6.2.G, i'm
sorry to inform you that Thomson Brussels declared
war to 'DMT' and similar 3rd-party SoftWare: they
disabled it by design. One other problem with the
late FirmWare is remote management as it no longer
works, at least not here. If you hate black boxes
then i strongly suggest you consider alternatives!



You'll find many posts stating that the SpeedTouch
is great. Personally, i ended up putting back the
old GNet BB0060B model which i intended to replace
with it; my atenuation figures didn't even happen
to be marginal and i expected the ST5x6 series had
a net advantage over the GNet in terms of FirmWare
development (years!) and of HardWare revisions (at
least three additional boards, maybe more)... The
fact is that this ST546 would force me to call the
ISP who would call the telephone company until i'm
satisfied that no further tweaking of the UpStream
bandwidth is required to control crosstalk-induced
noise enough for the lousy FirmWare to do its job,
something i accomplish by myself on the GNet (it's
effectively fixing intermittent disconnections)...
An ST5x6 will force the owner to leave his machine
on day and night to run some SNMP-based monitoring
application while i simply use 'DMT' once a day to
generate nice 24 h error rate curves from internal
records (the ST546 has severe memory limitations).

Honestly, "great" isn't the word that comes to the
mind when you're back to square one, searching for
a replacement unit again, euh... but i understand
individuals who value their SpeedTouch. As far as
i'm concerned, my v6 is quite immature despite all
that time, work and enthousiast frienzy around it.

Talking of old firmware, why is it that on the SpeedTouch website the latest firmware on offer is still 6.1.4.3 which is out of date compared to the latest v6.2.G ?

Probably because of pressure from ISP's so that people would let BT's DMT work unhindered by people tweaking their connections!?

I never use it anyway but it seems silly disabling the Remote Assistance feature!


In fact the firmware that I'm using now (6.2.15.5) seems to be more stable than the old 6.1.4.3 was and that was pretty stable!

My errored seconds and FEC error count are much reduced using this firmware!

Well, Thomson's "partner" web site simply required
too much of my time when i went there so i gave up
promptly, it felt inadequate and other individuals
obtained a permission to host ST resources anyway:

Thomson sends mixed signals thru their site and it
would have made more sense to me if they had tried
to integrate their own diagnostics tool to the GUI
instead of just disabling 'DMT', for example; the
loss of remote management doesn't make more sense.

I won't hold my breath waiting for the 7th edition
of the Consumer Grade SpeedTouch series, i bet the
crunchy features will move to their Busine$$ Grade
products, actually. I once considered the WesTell
6100 (E99-610010-00) model but a proprietary Win32
application is required for diagnostics, searching
for major manufacturers i learned that US Robotics
only got old 2006 FirmWares for their 910x devices
so i started wondering about some 'Viking II Plus'
based MoDem/Router (possibly obsolete but at least
i got a good idea of what i can expect from it), a
Siemens C2-010-I unit should work with 'DMT v3.06'
but does it work at all in Canada?... This market
may need some competition to stimulate creativity,
don't you think? Lots of competition i would say!

By business grade products I assume you are referring to Office routers which cost a small fortune?
