Which Speedtouch 546 do I have ?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've just bought a used Speedtouch 546 from eBay and I'm having trouble working out which firmware I need.

Router says:

Version 5.2.7.19.0
File ZZTVAJ5.27J
Board type BANT-J

I tried downloading:

ST5x6_v5_UK_firmware6147.zip

But I get the error ERROR : Wrong file type. when I try uploading the bin file. I'm not sure if I need something different.

Thanks

Andrew

It is a v5 as the Board Name is BANT-J.

Are you using the upgrade wizard or the router's web interface?

I'm using the web-interface, I'm choosing 'upgrade' then specifying the BIN file decompressed from the downloaded zip file.

Thanks

Andrew

Hmm, I use a 546v5. Firmware v6.1.4.7 is what I use and is the best compromise between DMT usage and general functioning.

Try the special installer, rather than trying to install from the Web interface.

Some time ago, I wrote a note for myself all about this and will post the elements of it here for you as soon as I can find it.

Further to my reply, here's what you need to do. Bear in mind that it was some while ago that I flashed the firmware of mine and that therefore I can't guarantee that various files will still be available. You'll need to find out where to download the installer file but hopefully someone else will be able to help, there. It was from an ftp site, I think. I'm still searching in my notes for a record of it.

Note that 6.1.4.7 does not provide for graphical output from the utility DMT. However, you can still use DMT with 6.1.4.7 to set a revised target SNR.

The binary file (the new firmware) is called ST5x6v5 6.1.4.7 UK.bin and is contained in ST5x6_v5_UK_firmware6147.zip, downloadable from the Speedtouch website. It sounds like you've already got that. The installation wizard for this is the file upgradeST.exe, which is contained in a corresponding but separate zip file. As I say, I seem to recall that the installation zip file was available from an ftp site that someone else in these forums quoted, but unfortunately I don't seem to have a record of the URL. Anyone?

Anyway, assuming you can get that file, here's the procedure:

Unplug the DSL cable from the router. With the router power on, do a factory reset of the router, by holding the reset switch down in the tiny hole at the back of the 546 (see 546 manual). Temporarily turn off your screensaver, antivirus and any additional firewall.

In Windows, navigate to the folder where you've unzipped the installation file and double-click on upgradeST.exe. Ensure that the connection between router and PC is enabled, because at this point the wizard will be searching for the router and obtaining basic data from it. Follow the wizard's instructions. Use 'administrator' for username and, for password, leave blank.

In the dialog box that follows that, click 'Have Disk' and browse to the folder ST5x6_v5_UK_firmware6147. This folder will contain ST5x6v5 6.1.4.7 UK. bin. Press OK, then Next.

The upgrading of the firmware will then start. A progress screen will show. Do nothing; just wait. The upgrade takes about 3 mins to complete. When done, press Finish.

Leave the DSL cable disconnected. Open the browser and, at the Welcome window, click on 'Set up my Speedtouch'. A wizard then runs which takes you through simple configuring of the router. Set to Data (Default), and enter all the other basic data for your particular connection. Later, fully configure the 546, using the Toolbox menu of the router.

Connect the DSL cable and wait for the router to sync the line.

Hi,

Thanks for this, and, leaving the problem that I don't have a Windows PC for the time being. Am I correct in thinking I need a specific updgradeST.exe for the firmware. There's a wizard download for the 5.4 firmware, but, couldn't see one for the newer firmware.

I've just bought 4 of these from eBay, so I'll give it a whirl, if I brick it I'll move on to the next test subject.

Thanks again for these comprehensive instructions.

I've not been able to find the note I made of the URL from which I obtained the installer. I've also done a Search on thinkbroadband but haven't been able to locate the thread in which it was mentioned.

Re you running a Mac, I think you might have a problem there, as the installation wizard I mentioned is designed for a PC. Although I think recent Macs recognise and can deal with zip files, I don't think they recognise .exe files.

After a long bout of searching, I've finally found the installation file to which I was referring. It's call Upgrade_Wizard_54.zip and is available from:

http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/downloads/5x6/5_40B_UK/Upgrade_Wizard_54.zip

Unzip it to a suitable folder, then in that folder, execute the UpgradeST.exe file (when you've suitably prepared the bin file and when you're ready to do the upgrade).

I can give no assurances whatever that this will work on a Mac. I would think not. But it works fine on a PC.

Various ST firmware updates are available from:

http://mirror.opensourcehub.com/pub/speedtouch/routers/ST546

However, I've been unable to find v6.1.4.7 there, even looking through the parent directory. It's possibly been removed from there.

Hi,

I managed to get that utility running using virtualisation. I've uploaded the firmware and everything seems great. My next question is where do I get some more instructions on the CLI mode of this fine router, there seems to be a lot of configuration options available under the CLI that aren't available under the web-mode (understandably). The Thompson site only has CLI instructions for an older firmware. Is there a community site or something for these devices?

Thanks

Andrew
