So essentially, I should try my exiting router (I think it's a Linksys Wag54 or something) with the cable modem they supply. I'm a bit worried as that unit also has a modem in it - do you think it might get confused? Ie, plugging a router with modem into another modem?

No. You cant plug a Cable Modem into an ADSL Router (well you can but it wont work as expected)

You need an .. ahem .. Broadband Router..

If you dont want to splash out you can pick up a cheap Linksys WRT54G (or WRT54GS) off eBay. (Buy from someone with good feedback)
In the shops these are call Broadband Routers or Cable Routers or (confusingly) 'DSL/Cable' routers.

If you want new, eBuyer have a section called 'Cable/DSL Routers' - I'd go for the WRT54GL at 38.04

If you want it now, PCWorld have a section called 'Cable Routers' - The Netgear WGR614 looks like a good deal 39.82 - collect@store - search code 951446 (purely based on comparison to eBuyer price of 35.54 and eBuyer customer comments, I've never used it myself.)

Okay - I apologise.

It would seem however from the OP's latest post that he has been confused by some of the advice offered, this is what I was trying to avoid by using terms that were likely to be most helpful.

My response was given in the context of what advice would be most useful (don't buy a dsl router, buy a broadband one) I'm not disputing what US retailers call them or that they are simple ethernet routers with an easy to understand GUI. I was trying to provide simple helpful advice and got the impression others were more keen on point scoring and 'nit picking' than helping the OP.

Anyway as I said - petty slight cheerfully withdrawn.

Ok, got it now, that just about answers my question! 40 quid sounds fair enough...

Thanks for all the help.
