Modem router connection question ?

[link to this post]

Hi , I was wondering if this scenario will work for connection to Desktop computer?

Modem Router connected to telephone master socket ( Not near any PC , say upstairs?)
Wireless dongle / card connected to main Desktop PC downstairs receiving wireless signal from Router?

The Router would not be attached to any computer at all , just the power and the phone line input !
Would you be able to "set-up" the main router even if not connected by USB / Ethernet cable ?

thanks

Pete

Set up the router by plugging it into your PC, via the supplied CAT5 patch cable.
You don't need to have the router connected to the phone line, to set it up.
Then move the router, once you've made sure you can connect to it by wireless, to where the master phone socket is, and preferably use an ADSL filtered face-plate on the master socket (that way, you'll get the best ADSL connection speed).

Usually it's possible to do it via wireless - although to set up the wireless you might be better advised to do that 'wired' - though no issues in setting that up wired 'upstairs' and then taking the router downstairs to set up the internet connection.

Thanks for the swift replies. I ve been thinking all day about this and the answers you've given are all things I thought of. My main worry was setting up the router. So once its set up using the desktop , I could unplug , move to the Phone master socket , set up there and then use the main comp wirelessly. For some reason I thought that this couldn't be done ? Would I be still able to access the "homepage" for the router and adjust the settings , even though the desktop was acting as a "slave" with the wireless?

Cheers again

Pete

You will still be able to access your router wirelessly from your PC. You will just be browsing a local web page stored on the router. Of course if you are not careful when you change wireless encryption settings you might lock yourself out - you will then need to use a wired link to correct the situation.
