Forcing a sync speed?

I have a slight problem with staying synced, since whenever my router is reset for some reason, it starts the whole process of finding a stable sync again (and this changes dramatically in the evening from the day).

It constantly tries to connect at the 8128, and that's fine during the day, but ends up with hours of packet loss and disconnects through the evening until it settles at about 7200 (Interleaving is off, so that explains that).

I'm wondering if it's possible to set my router to sync at a set speed even after a reset to avoid the problem? Possibly with a Telnet command?

The router in question is a D-Link DSL-2640B.

Don't think so, with that router.
The only one I know of, that allows something close to what you're looking for, is the Belkin 7632, which allows you to set a cap on the sync speed (to prevent it from syncing too high).
The Belkin is quite an old router, but I've seen them recently in Maplin on sale at around �30-40.

Thanks for that, pretty disappointing. Was hoping all those Telnet commands would be useful for something.

Problem is when I'm online in the evenings I'll be gaming, and having packet loss kick me out every 5 minutes or cause extreme latency is even more annoying than the actual connection drop outs since it can go on for several days depending on how quickly the router adjusts (so in some respects it's better to have terrible line quality in the evenings as it'll drop sync quicker).

Must be something that can be done rather than this.

The other way is to force a stupidly high target noise margin (something that's so high, no amount of normal noise will trigger a re-sync - around 12dB would be about right).
Unfortunately, I don't think that's possible with your current router, either.
For this, you need a Broadcom chipset (as used by Speedtouch, some Netgears, and the odd Linksys, Belkin and Voyager routers).

Might be worth picking up a �13 Speedtouch 546 from DSL Depot for a bit of a play.

No, because the BT systems would adjust your IP profile, to prevent 7Mbps trying to get through a 6Mbps "hole", so additional packet loss would not happen.

Looks like you may be on a 9dB target margin already, so with a suitable Broadcom equipped router, you could push the target up to 15dB.
You'd lose around 1.5Mbps of speed (your IP profile would drop from 6.5Mbps to around 5Mbps), but you'd be really stable (or at least your line would ).

Hmm, well, it's a 6000 profile and that's 100% stable. Could probably push 6500 stable, but the sync speeds are never exact.

With interleaving, I suppose the full 8128 would be fine (especially since it manages it all hours except a few in the evening), but I'm not a fan of the extra latency.

If I could keep a 6000 profile that'd suit me just fine though, but I'm still not 100% sure how it'd work (target SNR has always been a bit foggy for me).

The series of commands are the same as for the Belkin 7633.
In which case, [--snr <snrQ4>] would become [--snr <xx>] where 'xx' is the tweak.
On the Belkin, you can take it all the way down to '01' (approx. 6dB off the DSLAM target), a value above approx. 60 will add to the target.
A little bit of playing is required (but not too much, otherwise the OP will incur the wrath of the DLM monster).
