Problems with router.. low speed

[link to this post]

Hi just bought a Netgear wireless router with built in modem. Having very slow speeds. My ISP is Tiscali, I'm getting about 20-30KB/s maximum when I should normally get 150KB/s easily.

I get my normal 150KB/s download speed when I just use my old modem and not the router.

HOw can I make my internet faster?

First thing to do is check what speed each device is saying that it is connecting over the ADSL line.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php lists pages to look at for the common types of hardware

Which modem is that with? And what are the other figures, i.e. attenuation and noise margin.

As I said, different hardware can perform differently on the same line, and not a lot you can do. Seeing all the figures will help to assess if you have a generic issue with your line.

Can help you go faster - but without seeing the attenuation and noise margin data it is hard to suggest by how much

Is it a new Netgear or bought off eBay or something?

What make and model is the old router? We can look to see if you can get stats using that for comparison. These would be useful even though we know you get the proper speed, in order to see what else is different.

Assuming these are from the new netgear device, seeing data from the old modem would help too.

A long line with a high target noise margin most likely. I would expect you to be running faster, but to be honest it may simply be you have a Netgear router that does not like your line.

It is a NetGear DG834G brand new. Didn't have a router before, just had the modem that came with it. ISP is Tiscali in case I haven't mentioned before. Is thre any known compatibility issues with that router and Tiscali?
