ADSL Modem needed

[link to this post]

Hello All

I would like to renew my modem/router. The one im using at presant it is the Thomson Speed-touch 780wl it has given good service but i would like something newer with better features

Can anyone suggest anything or point me in the right direction of the the best ones out there at the moment It dont matter weather it is a stand alone modem or a modem router combined...It needs to be in the £50 to £100 range please maby a slight bit more. The speed-touch is not ADSL2 so which is another reason to change. My sync speeds are never more than 5500 as of yet if that helps

As for my wish list It might be nice to have a good internal diagnostics line stats page that has logging or email notification of dropouts and sync loss But these are not necessary at all. as i can use s/w to do what is needed for the line stats. Also it would not matter if the new modem did not have a Voip port.. Just as i said a wish list lol

I just want/need a good all round modem

(I do really like the look of the Belkin N1 vision But is it all just that a good looking modem and for show and just gimmicks or a Sheep in Wolfs clothing and the such if you get my meaning Just how good is it at what it does or supposed to do?? Many thanks

Regards Andy

Can you check the firmware version on your 780WL? As mentioned by the previous poster, the 780WL is definitely compatible with ADSL2+ (both Annex A and M) at firmware version 6.1.4.3, since I have used one at this firmware version on an ADSL2+ line. If your main reason for buying a new router is to get ADSL2 support, and you can get this by simply flashing the firmware, that would certainly be your most cost-effective solution.

No, mine was ADSL1,ADSL2,ADSL2+ compatible out of the box.

Several premier broadband suppliers provide Speedtouch routers as their recommended router. They do seem very good to me.

Sorry, you've lost me. I don't know what you mean, but the 780wl is an ADSL2+ router.

Mainly i think the router is getting tired and keeps resetting quiet a lot now . It could be down to my line stats being aver 4k from the exchange and also that my SNR can drop as low as 3.5 but mainly between 4 and 7 so its a low setting also I do know some routers are better than others with a low SN margin

From this line stats post your modulation is G.992.1 Annex A ..... better known as G.DMT, i.e. ADSL.

It's not ADSL2 or ADSL2+
