What you are trying to do is STOP the 780 allocating the IP addresses to any device and allowing the other hub to do so.

In the CLI the instruction would be something like: dhcp server config state = disabled or dhcp server config state = disabled

But when I login into 192.168.1.254 I do not get a start up sequence - 10.0.0.138 does not login.

You should see the Speedtouch Homepage. Click Speedtouch, then click Pick a Task and then Set-up.

tried typing that in a command prompt box got the message 'dhcp' is not recognised etc

dhcp server config = disabled

Not sure how you telnet the Speedtouch 780 WL but did you initially use:

telnet 192.168.1.254

then enter Username and Password?

Speedtouch originally used the 10.0.0.xxx private IP range but followed the sheep when most other started using 192.168.1.xxx you need to know which block yours is using.

That should be OK for his ST ... it will come up with a very login screen - reminiscent of an ASCII drawing! and then requests Name and Password.

Yep, that's what I get with a tg585v7 but haven't checked how to disable DHCP since the commands may be quite different for a Speedtouch 780 WL...
