BT Infinity modem

If I get one of the many openreach vdsl modems on ebay HG612 , will I be able to use this on a non bt infinity service? ie VDSL FTTC? I see they can be unlocked, if this is the case can they be used with any VDSL serivce and bridged to a router?

Yes, and it's an ADSL modem as well as being a router.

Godamn, I am connected to the main exchange which is 1.9 km away in another town and apparently my line cant be routed to the cab in my town which is like 1.2km away.

Does that sound like a common scenario?

Not common but it does happen quite often. There can be many reasons for it - such as te cable run from te main exchange was easier to install, or was a shorter route at te time; Your town is newer and the exchange was installed after your house was built; No capacity in the closer exchange when your estate was built and so on.
