2 pair CAT5e cable suppliers?

Hi all,

I'm after some 2 pair CAT5e UTP cable to make up some master socket > modem/ router cables. I only want around 5 metres. Could any of you give me details of a trusted supplier you use for this type of cable?

Have just checked my supplier (very reputable) - they don't have any!

There are a few on ebay that make cables to length - could be worth trying or just order a 10m one and cut/recrimp as you need.

It may not be a perfect way to do it, but you could use 4pair cut two pairs off and then use heatshrink sleeve over the end to seal it and reduce the OD to fit the connectors. Have often seen it done that way.

The older BT data extension kit was based on 2pair - so if you know any BT Techs you might be in luck scrounging a length.

After not being able to find a reputable source for the cut cable, my next thought was to order a longer pre-made cable and cut it down. I was after a 5m length for experimentation more than anything else and only really need a very short length as the ZyXel device I'll be using for an FTTC modem sits just above the master socket on a mounting board I've made.
I think if I was to do that though, I may just as well get a correct length cable made.
There seems to be a guy eBay who makes variable lengths and looks decent enough. In light of your response, I may just ask him to make me a cable to my specs. He can only say no I guess.

2nd image in the listing appears to show a genuine BT label. It's cheap enough to take a gamble on.

Yes, genuine BT - they started that organisation last year when they bought an ailing supplier, I believe.


It was a BICC plant then became Belden followed by B3 and finally taken on by BT.

Agreed, it will be a little unforgiving to work with but I'm fairly used to that. I had the house wired with solid conductor CAT5e (LSZH) and terminated most of that as 'flying' leads into the various bits of kit I have. Even the cabling into the master socket is solid conductor CAT5e. I've got used to the rigidity and just make sure I don't bend it through tight radius'.

I think the cable I'll make from this will only be around 25cm long and should be fairly straight. I can always use a heat gun to help curve it to shape too I guess. If it's too unforgiving, it was only £5 so I'll just scrap it and find some more flexible stuff elsewhere.

They did have some indoor spec cable but, it didn't explicitly state it was CAT5e and there was no labelling either so, I didn't want to risk that.

I did also find some fancy German made 2 pair stuff but, it was shielded so that put me off. It did look nice though!

I honestly just buy RJ11 pre-made cables. They're compatible with RJ45 sockets so I just bung them into my structural cabling - just be sure not to connect it into a switch!

Why???

They aren't designed as ethernet cables and a switch can't be used for the connection back to the phone line. Standards wise they don't meet the requirements to run ethernet networking.

FYI

CW1308 is used for internal telephone scokets

CW1311 is used from the wall socket to the devise ( phone / modem / router )

maybe helpfull in the future
