Well well well. Here's me telling eveyone, family and friends and anyone who would listen, what friendly, knowledgeable and helpful people frequent these forums, seems I have to eat my words. Based on the wobbly lines for the download in http://www.petremembrance.co.uk/test.png if that is with the openreach modem and netgear router and connected to the router over an Ethernet cable you might be looking at something that is nothing to do with the VDSL connection but just peak time congestion at the ISP.
