The point I was trying to make is how can I ensure the latest firmware if not unlocking and not on BT. I will be putting the modem next to the NTE socket and using an existing ethernet cable to the router upstairs, so wont be able to access stats AFAIK.

Assuming you have a HG612, the locked modem should be upgraded by Openreach to the latest version over the wire. If you unlock the modem you will be able to access the stats on your network given the correct settings on the modem.

I have never been on BT.

To be able to access the stats you would basically either need to run a second ethernet cable or split out a pair from the existing one and fit a plug for the LAN2 socket. Similarly at the router end.

Even if I order from Uno, will Openreach still update it. I have got one from ebay but the owner didnt know what revision it is, will have to wait and see. Im not fussed on stats because it looks like a hassle unless as on Kitz page you can get stats over WAN ie one wire, will have to look at the Kitz forum.

Also will I have to change the LAN address of the modem as currently it would clash with the router, I see there is a way to do that when the firmware is unlocked to GUI. Current router address and gateway is 192.168.1.1. Dont want to reconfigure all my devices to a new gateway by changing the router LAN address. Some devices are static.

Openreach should update it, regardless of ISP.

If the modem is locked you won't be able to access it so it doesn't matter what its IP address is, it won't clash as it's on the WAN side of your router.

If it's unlocked then you can access the stats over the one wire by giving the modem a private address outside of your LAN and unticking the bound LAN1 port. Because the address is outside your LAN, your router will forward the packets down the default gateway.

I'm not familiar with whatever it is on the Kitz forum, but the normal way is a second ethernet cable from the modem LAN2 to a LAN port on the router. LAN1 of the modem obviously going to the router WAN port.

Then the modem can be accessed through the router as normal - ethernet or wifi.

Can you get line stats from your Billion at the moment?
