Which modem to go for...

Hi all,

Currently using BT HHv5 and I am looking to redesign the whole network setup.

Took delivery of UniFi USG and also AP Pro yesterday and I am looking to replace the BT HHv5 with the aim of an 'modem only' setup (i.e. turn off other settings, leaving just modem feature)

After researching, I have narrowed down to the following:

* Technicolor TG582n (currently have it in storage)
* HG612 3b (will need to get one)

Question is... which one is better? Ideally, I am looking for a modem with strong up/download speed with little or no reboots.

Or is there something else that I should be looking at?

TG582n does not have a VDSL2 modem in it

So HG612 then other options are

Vigor 130 though is not cheap at £80

The one I use is the
TP-Link W9970 which can be used as modem in bridge mode or a all-in-one device, and is around £36

For some reasons, I thought the TG582n can do both ADSL & VDSL2, my bad.

I guess this make things easier now, looks like HG612 is the winner then.

I think the HG612 is likely to gave lower sync speeds, on Huawei cabs at least, than more modern kit.

ZyXel, Draytek and Billion all show Attainable 5-7Mbps higher than my two HG612s. Unfortunately my current banding stops me knowing what would happen if it wasn't there, so I can't guarantee it.

Problem with the Vigor 130 is that it has no Ethernet LAN port, unlike the HG612. So getting in-flight stats is a problem. From what I read, some Draytek routers may be able to interrogate it through the WAN connection and display the stats.

I haven't tried the V130, but certainly with other Vigor models (V100 & V120) I've been able to interrogate the modem via the same Ethernet cable used for the WAN.

You need make sure the modem address is within a different subnet to your LAN, then add a route to direct traffic destined for the Modem address to use the WAN port - but outside of the PPP session (which will be the default gateway).

Whether your router allows to to add a route I don't know, but on *nix something like:

ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0

can be used, where 192.168.1.0/24 is the subnet of the modem and eth0 is the WAN interface of your router.

With what router between you and the Vigor?
