Depends on what is in your cabinet. Huwei cab - HG612, ECI cab ECI modem.

It looks like the kind of thing I want but is horribly expensive at £76. Might I not be better getting hold of an ECB type 1b from eBay, which seems to do the same thing (PPPoE bridge) but is Openreach branded?

A couple of ways if you know where your cabinet is you could take a pic and post it here and someone will tell you or google the different cabinets and see if you can work out which it is. Probably the easiest is the first option.

There have been problems with ECI cabinets because they don't support G.INP whereas the Huawei do. G.INP tends to give higher sync speeds.

Pictures. There is a newer one not on there, which is an All-in-One, that looks a bit like a narrower Huawei 288, with no vents in the right-hand door.

There's a method here to find your cabinet http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/cabinet-lookup.htm

The big difference between the two is that the Huawei can be easily unlocked so you can access the line stats but the ECI cannot. Both are locked when supplied by Openreach

But the Huawei do still work with ECI cabinets, right?

I mean let's say my cabinet is ECI. Which modem of the following will work best, and which worst?
- ECI Modem Type 1B
- Huawei EchoLife HG612 3B
- Draytek Vigor 130

The best to buy off eBay used to be the HG612 3B as it lets you see the stats once you unlock it. Both it and the ECI are now rather long in the tooth, both in specification in terms of the connection speed they can deliver and sheer age. We are seeing a few on these forums that are playing up. I have two, that now mess up the line/DLM. They used to be great.

Mine need binning. I wouldn't trust some people not to eBay theirs in the same condition.

The Vigor 130 should be OK but not easy to get stats from. I sent mine back after three days and bought a Billion 8800NL R2 that suits me in modem/router mode. That can be used in bridge mode but I haven't tried it, even though my now unused ASUS router is sitting next to it. Wireless drawback with the Billion is that it is 2.4GHz only, but the best on that I have had.
