New router for FTTP

[link to this post]

Hi guys, looking at getting full fibre soon as my Plusnet broadband is coming to an end. At the moment I have a Billion 8800NL R2 router but looking for something newer with better Wifi.

I am tempted to go with Aquiss or Swish Fibre but not sure what router I would need, any recommendations?

Cheers

Would they not supply you with a router?

i got myself a Tp-link Archer Archer AX53, while i am not using it for FTTP, it will work fine with FTTP.

Around £70 from Amazon.

I have been on Aquiss FTTP 350/45 for over a year: it hasn't missed a heartbeat. I connect via a Fritz!box 4060 that offers Wifi 6 and I have a Fritz!Repeater that I use to provide a LAN wired connection to a remote study.

A speedtest a minute or so ago shows 301/46.8 with a Ping of 12ms

They don't supply one as standard, so if you want one from them, you have to pay for it. (That's one reason why they can offer a 12 month contract and no setup fee)

Aquiss seem to recommend specific models of TP-Link router:
https://support.aquiss.net/en/knowledgebase/article/...
At least if you have a problem with any of these, Aquiss may be able to help you fix it.

If you want to choose something else, then it depends what sort of features you're looking for. I have Mikrotik with separate Ubiquiti wireless access points, but I'm hard-core techie smile

Most modern routers should be able to handle a gigabit FTTP connection (900/110). Some people have said that the Ubiquiti Dream Machine doesn't work very well with PPPoE though.

I have an Aquiss connection (500Mbps) and am using an Eero 6+ mesh router with it. Was easy enough to setup - Aquiss give you the information even though they don't support the router (they did confirm to me they had other customers using the Eero routers before I signed up).

I've been with Aquiss since March 2020 - excellent service and would thoroughly recommend them.

I changed to a Synology RT6600ax router in June last year (22) and would also thoroughly recommend it despite its high price. The Wifi is particularly good and effortlessly copes with the victorian era 2 ft thick granite walls of our house.

Good luck with whatever choices you make.

i looked at that one before i got mine, but decided that the extra cost was not worth it for me, it may be different for you. It is a nice router if you have a use for the extra features.
