Mikrotik Routers

[link to this post]

Anyone tried the hap range of Mikrotek routers. Wondering if the ac2 or ax2 wifi is any good.

I have a mikrotik hAP from my ISP. It works OK and as far as I recall, the wifi was OK. I preferred to get my own mikrotik hEX with no wifi as the ISP one was locked down so far that it determined my DHCP address range. I would rate mikrotik as very competent, insofar as you are able to set about everything you could ever think of, but they seem to make little concession to less technical user, although there is a basic setup page.

I haven't used any of the Mikrotik routers with wifi, as I have separate ceiling-mounted wireless access points (Uniquiti Unifi AC Lite)

My first Mikrotik was the hEX PoE. Very small, and has PoE outputs that power the APs. But its single core MIPS CPU can only really route about 300Mbps. (You can get up to about 900M for IPv4 if you turn on Fasttrack). Also, no serial console.

My current is the RB4011. It has a quad-core ARM CPU and can route a gigabit without breaking a sweat - I can heartily recommend it. I use the hEX PoE as a switch for powering the APs.

I see there is a version of the RB4011 which has wifi: the snappily named RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN. I'm sure it's a fine device, but personally I'd always go the separates route.

The hAP AC2 and AX2 do look like good value though, especially the AX2 which has a 64-bit CPU.

Yes they are rather well priced. Some reviews saying Wifi is average because of no aerials.

The AC3 and AX3 have aerials according to the pictures, but quite a bit more expensive. The AX3's CPU is as powerful as my RB4011 though.

Not the hAP range, but I've used other models including the RB4011 AP version (RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN).
Tested around a flat a few years back, the Wi-Fi was generally 'okay' but our Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR is much better (Around a larger property too).

The routing performance of the RB4011 is outstanding.

If you're looking for performance, I'd recommend an RB4011 or RB5009 (Even better) combined with a Ubiquiti AP. Bear in mind you'll need a device/model (or injector) capable of PoE for the AP.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Telewest (2004-2006): 256Kbps -> 512Kbps
University of Portsmouth (2013 - 2014) - Supposedly 100/100Mbps
Virgin Media (2014 - 2021): ~1150/53Mbps (MikroTik RB4011iGS)
BT (2006 - Present): 8128/448 -> 22494/1211 -> 80Mbps FTTC (MikroTik hEX)

Aside: the RB4011 has passive PoE out on ether10, but I tried it on one of my Unifi APs (AC Lite) and it wasn't reliable. You can always use the power injector supplied with the AP though.
